жизнь можно посвятить чему-то, a не для чего-то.

If it were an animate object, then this would be the same as the genitive, but in this context, "it" is a fact or knowledge of some kind, so it would be inanimate and therefore the same as the nominative: это.

"Путь" means "way" in the sense of a road or a path - as in the first verse of the Russian folk song "Степь да степь кругом" (here copied from "Ruslan 1" http://www.ruslan.co.uk)

To say "That is just the way it is", I think the expression is simply "Это так" - "That is how it is"
