Thread: в хрущёвке?

I am trying to understand the song Вахтерам by Бумбокс, and I've come up against a word I can't find a definition for: в хрущёвке.

In context, it reads:

Я помню белые обои, чёрная посуда
Нас в хрущёвке двое, кто мы и откуда?
Задвигаем шторы, кофеёк, плюшки стынут
Объясните теперь нам, вахтёры,
Почему я на ней так сдвинут?

What is the word in the genitive (edit, I meant nominative) -- would it be хрущевик, perhaps? And what is it?

Here, I'll tell you. Imagine a one bedroom apartment, the smallest and cheapest one, whith a kitchen-living-room. Well, maybe, with a make-shift wall dividing your bedroom so it would be like two bedrooms. This is, roughly, a хрущёвка.
I grew up in such an apartment and, actually, we managed to be quite happy there... The songs tells it all!

Sounds like all small and low-cost single-room apartments are "хрущевки", whilst "хрущевка" just derives from "Хрущев" as that type of apartments appeared during Khrushchev's governance.

There is one more word : xрущёбы — it is a mix of words хрущевки and трущёбы.

Exactly! Khrushchev was the one who initiated the project of such buildings. (Or so I believe anyway. I may be wrong, then, please, those who know the Rusiian history of the Kchrushchev's time, correct me) These 5-storey buildings were everywhere, all over Russia.

There are also Сталинки (Сталинские дома) houses that were built during the Stalin's reign. To these days they are of a great value and considered 'premium class' for living.

As far as I know there were no Горбачёвки as the guy was busy doing other important things.
