But that's not "on the weekend", it's "on weekends".

Po vyhodnym, ya edu na dachu.
On weekends, I go to my dacha.

Could it be "na vyhodnye"?

Doesn't this technically apply to all days off - public holidays etc. too - rather than just weekends? Or am I just a terminal pedant?

Also how would you say "To rent"(For example an apartment)

Each of these days, Saturday and Sunday, in Russian is called “выходной день” (relaxing day—not a direct translation). In plural it will be “выходные дни”. But in most cases Russians throw off word “день” and use word “выходной” as a noun (though actually it's an adjective). This pseudonoun has plural form “выходные”. Note that the singular word “weekend” in English means both Saturday and Sunday, but in Russian singular word “выходной” means either Saturday or Sunday. So for singular “weekend” you should use plural “выходные”.

Prepositions usage:
“On the weekend”—“на выходные”
“On weekends”—“по выходным”
“On this weekend”—“на эти выходные” or “в эти выходные”

“To rent” is “снимать/снять”. It's slang word and used only for flats. Normal translation for “to rent” is “арендовать” but it is more appropriate to use in commercial field.
