Thread: Yet another.......

Hello, I have a need for help for a valentines day letter. Ive met a girl and she is russian, she speaks russian and german, i speak german also but for valentines day i would like to write her a small paragraph:

How are you? I hope you enjoyed the card! I was a bit afraid to give it to you because i was unsure of what you would think about what I wrote. Do you think anything like me? Everything i said is true, you have wonderful eyes that make my heart stop every time i see them. I absolutely love your accent also. I have thought so much about you in the past week, you would not belive it! When i think about you, its hard for me to work or sleep. I just wanted you to know these things, and that i think you are beautiful. I hope i can see you sometime on Valentines day. I would be proud to hold your hand and to have you as mine!

P.s. I am not sure about the translation of some phrases (althought I understand it's meaning), so I left them in English...

как ты is just fine... this is kinda how i break down the russian greetings. i dunno if they are 100% correct.


как ты = how are you
как дела = how are things
как ты поживаешь = how are you doing

I have heard stuff like this in russian all the time... usually like "Я хочу что ты моя" or "Скажи что я твой" and so on

Я был бы счастлив держать тебя за руку и быть твоим парнем, perhaps? You could break it off and say "Я хочу, чтобы ты была бы моей..." Perhaps someone will come up with something more elegant.

But I insist on using " Как ты?" because it sounds more sympathetically or more friendly... I can't explain. I'd like to be asked "Как ты?" (imho)

I think all the mentioned expressions are all right. It's a matter of personal preference. "Как ты?" is just the most informal, IMHO.

To me, "Как ты?" sounds like a machine translation from English

"Как дела?", "Как делишки?", "Как делищи?", "Как оно ничего?", "Как жизнь?", "Как житуха?" - that is what I actually hear around. But never "Как ты?".

Come to think of it, I heard "Ну ты как?" a few times, but not "Как ты?".

i heard it in Брат ! so it works for me.

I often say "Как дела? Как жизнь?" but "Как ты?" sounds very intimate and is OK if you say that to your girlfriend for example. So "Как дела?" is more neutral (like you don't really care how things are going for somebody and just say it as "Hi" And when I say "Как ты?" that usually means that I'm kinda anxious about smb. (about smb's health for example). For instance, if someone slips and fells I can say "Как вы? Не ушиблись?". And if you write a letter to your friend you surely can say "Как ты?". That sounds natural Russian to me.

Yes, this is a good example. If you have a reason to be worried about someone, you can say "Как ты?" with a specific intonation. And that sould mean that you really want to know about his/her health or if s/he is OK. In English, in a similar situation one would normally ask "Are you OK?" But you can hardly use it in the beginning of a letter.

Dogboy, I haven't seen "Брат", in what circumstances was "Как ты?" used?

lol, i don't remember. she might not have said it in брат, but i do remember hearing it somwhere. Anyways, if it was in брат, it would have been a girl"катя" (who is a pretty good acquaintance of the main character) saying it to the main character... if that matters.
I think they were meeting to go to a party or something.

come to find out she's been married for 3 years and is living under the german rule that divorces are automatic if they are seperate for 1 year, and she has only been seperate for 2 months!!!!!! Im sure theres a whole other forum for this kinda thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
