    Shashlik vocab

    Hi all,

I'm after some vocab associated with Shashlik (шашлык).

I've had a look around the net, and asked a few people, but haven't been able to find out whether there is a russian word for the skewer itself, or the one who makes Shashlik (akin to a baker making baked goods).

    Any thoughts?

While we're at it, does anyone have a rough idea of when Shashlik entered Russia?

    Cheers,

    Ioann.

    Hi Ioann,

The Russian word for 'skewer' is шампур (wikipedia says this word is Georgian).
The guy who makes Shashlik would be called шашлычник (shashlik maker).

Cheers for the quick answers guys. On the wiki page for skewer it says that шампуров are used to cook Shashlik, but it also seems to be the word for any skewer. Is there no special type of skewer for shashlik?

Also, could you tell me where the stress falls in шампур, and does anyone know the etymology of the word beyond it being Georgian, i.e. the general date it started being used?

    Thanks for all your help!

    шампУр

it's interesting that the word sounds similar to шОмпол, a wiping stick

depending what you mean by skewer, if you look here skewer - 約譛鱶鴃琿 you'll find quite a few translations including шампур and вертел (the one you probably mean)

    variants for шампур http://multitran.ru/c/m.exe?t=799866_2_1

as far as i know shashlik is both cooked and served on шампуры

WIKI confirms that skewer IS шампур
