I have a book on Russian idioms with their translation into the ukrainian language- I do not speak Ukrainian so can any one give me an approx translation of the meanings into English
Thanks:-more to follow !
Артель атаманом крепка
Ах да рукою мах, а том реки не переплыть
Баба да бес –один в них вес.
Бабушка надвое сказала
Беда , коль пироги начнёт печи сапожник.
Без суда не казнят
Без хозяина дом сирота
Бей дробней – больше счёту будет
Белый свет не клином стал
Ближняя родня–на одном солнце платья сушили
Близок локоть: да не укусишь.
Блин не клин брюха не расколет
Богатому чёрти деньги куют.

You know, these idioms are absolutelly useless fore you. Nobody say nothing like this. Probably, just "Babushka nadvoje skazala" - it means "we'll see what we will see" or "I wouldn't be too sure about that". But if you say it, it will sound very strange and old-fashioned. I've even never heard or read the rest of these idioms (and I have philological education in Russian).

Alexey is right nobody will tell you things like that and they are mainly not of russian origin and have a rare usage

Cвет клином не сошелся - quite common idiom

The rare idiom but not as rare as the other your exapmles.
Although something is close to you you cannot get it.
So near and yet so far.

Make the fool to pray - he will hurt his forehead. (i.e. earnest/laborious man without a brain).
Привычка – вторая натура
Old habits die hard.
Придти к шапочному разбору
To come when the show is over.
Пристал, как банный лист
To stick like glue to somebody.
Пришла беда - отворяй ворота (old use)
Беда не приходит одна
Troubles never come singly

По усам текло, а в рот не попало - It's typical ending of old, traditional fairy tales or stylized texts. Usually as a part of "И я там был, мед пиво пил, по усам текло, а в рот не попало". (см., например, Пушкин, "Руслан и Людмила"). Does not have any sence any more, but used to mean that you took part in something, but didn't get nothing of it. :o

laughingjohn, those idioms will be absolutely of no use to you if your goal is to communicate with the Russians that live in Russia today, not some 19th century peasants (I dunno, maybe you've invented a time machine and want to communicate with them). I've never in my entire life clapped my eyes on 99% of the "idioms" in your list.
