    Online interpreter

I typed the following simple sentences into an online interpreter and the results do not seem quite right.
    http://www.translate.ru/text.asp#tr_form
    Can someone correct these please?

I am sad. I am depressed.
    Я грустен. Я угнетен.

    I am happy.
    Я счастлив.

You are sweet. (Meaning that you are a nice person - not sweet tasting)
    Вы сладки.

I always thought that "I am sad" = "Мне грустно".

    Thanks

Don't trust online translators. Мне грустно is right. As for "You are sweet", wouldn't you say the English usage of "sweet" to mean "nice" comes from "sweet-tasting"? Anyhow, I'm not aware of such a usage in Russian; perhaps милый would be a better term. By the way, why are you using that word with someone you are on a вы basis with?

I typed in "You are sweet" and it automatically assumed вы.
Actually, now that you mention it, the online translator ALWAYS uses вы.
There should be check-box or something to tell the translator whether to use вы or ты.

You are probably right. It's a gloopy idea to use these online translators.

May be it's a nineteenth century translator.

It was customary then to use "вы" in almost any case.
Even between close friends or husband and wife or mother and children.

"ты" was left for the lowest class people.

You're so sweet. = Вы так милы.
