    Next Door

I'm curious to know what Russian's would say for next door. As in "next door neighbour".

I was watching a movie in Russian with English subtitles when the translation "the girl from next door" appeared. But I didn't hear the Russian word for "door", which gave me to thinking that maybe (like a lot of things) you cannot directly translate this.

    Any help?

I think you're right. I can't think of any word that could directly translate the English version into the Russian one. We normally say: соседка.
next door normally translates as по соседству, рядом

Incidentally, what's the name of that movie?

Actually, this is embarrassing and sad!

I ran out of Russian movies at my local DVD store so trawled for films which happened to have a Russian audio option. So I ended up hiring a French film (with bad Russian dubbing) called the "The Pact of Silence" starring Gerard Depardieu. It is some uninventive movie where Depardieu plays a Jesuit priest.

Unfortunately, I haven't watched this movie

Well, what about buying Russian movies via the Internet? I guess it's very expensive, isn't it? Perhaps, that store will get a few new movies in the nearest future. Did you ask them whether they're planning on purchasing more Russian movies?

I did ask them if they would be getting any more Russian movies but, unfortunately, in Australia we don't get too many foreign films (aside from the U.S.A.)

But, I have found a few websites where I can buy Russian movies. They are not too expensive (including postage) but my credit card is "maxed out" at the moment.

If would appreciate if you can give me a few titles for good Russian films?

First of all, what do you mean by Russian movies? Do you mean movies that are translated into Russian or do you mean movies that ae shot here in Russia?

You can download a lot of Russian movies off the Internet if you like. Quality may differ much so I usually download part of a movie and then check the quality. Another disadvantage of downloading movies off the web is that there are no subtitles. As far as I know you can find subtitles for loads of movies on the web, so probably it will not be a problem for you

I mean Russian movies that are shot in Russia or originally filmed in the Russian language.

Брат is a very good movie. It's one of my favorite ones. Especially the first movie. You know why? It's more real. I like the soundtrack too. Some movies just can't exist without their soundtracks. Брат is undoubtedly in this list.
