I'm trying to understand the different constructions used for expressing sameness.

So:

я купил тот же автомобиль, что и он

or:

я купил такой же автомобиль, как он купил

Actually, I'm less sure about the second one, which is based on what a well-known translator is giving me.

I think there is also a variation in which the second clause can use у него?

Sameness is conveyed by adding же to an "answer word," and the kind of sameness conveyed depends on what kind of answer it is:

"Question words" with their corresponding "answer words":
when then
who him
what that
where there
whither thither
whence thence

For Russian it is even more systematic:
These are called TK pairs

кто? То (Я вижу того, кто вчера украл мою книгу.) (him, who)
Что? То (Это - то, что было надо.) (that, which)
Когда? Тогда. (Болтают даже тогда, когда ты ничего понимаешь.) (when)
Где? Там. (Он - там, где был вчера.) (where)
Куда? Туда. (Идём туда, куда не хотим идти) (to where)
Откуда? Оттуда. (Это книга оттуда, откуда вы пришли.) (from where)
Как? Так. (Я сделал всё так, как ты мне сказала.) (how)

(Что? Это or то)

Notice that in English we leave out the first half. But in Russian, each side of the comma needs to be semi-self-sufficient.

Как?
Как ты мне сказала!

So when you say то(т) же you're saying the most basic "that same" as in
I bought the same car.
or
I bought that same car.

Whereas такой же (какой = what kind? такой = This kind.) means "the same kind"

Тогда же "the same time"

You'll notice that Russian are more willing to use the phrase "same kind" whereas in English we use "the same" a lot more. This is basically because they have a nifty stand-alone word for it. They're more specific as a result.

same car as he (bought)
same car as he (has)

Hello, everybody!

"я купил такой же автомобиль, как он купил" Almost correctly, but a little strange, . Word "купил" repeats 2 time. Тавтология, Tautology. A little Lexical error


Right examples:
я купил такой же автомобиль, что и он
я купил такой же автомобиль, как у него
я купил такой же как у него автомобиль
я купил ту же марку автомобиля, что и он


If you say "я купил тот же автомобиль, что и он". It is imposible or looks like fraud.
This expressing mean - you had bought only one car for two men - not 2 car.
