I'm new here but have been lurking the forums for a while but finally decided to register. I have learned a lot from you guys so thanks!

But now I would like some help in translating a few phrases that a friend of mine has left me.


I know they have something to do with time...

first she said

"кстати сколько у вас сейчас времени"

and I thought she said how much time I have now. So I said "a lot."

then she said
"и я спрашивала про разницу в времени"

so then I asked her to just tell me what she tried to say but instead just re-phrased it which made it a bit easier to understand

"okay, i'll try to explain!=)
мы живем в разных полушариях, и в разных часовых поясах,я хотела узнать разницу во времени"


So is she asking me the difference in time from each others time zones?

Hopefully someone can help me!

Yes, she wants to know the time differential.

сколько времени = what time is it?
сколько у вас сейчас времени = what time do you have now?

I was asking about the difference in time

We live in different hemispheres and different time zones; I wanted to know the time difference.

That's actually a quite funny translation error
She: кстати сколько у вас сейчас времени (What time do you have right now?)
You: I have a lot. ( )
She: и я спрашивала про разницу в времени (And I asked about the difference in time)
You: tell me what you tried to say but instead just re-phrase
She: okay, i'll try to explain!=)
мы живем в разных полушариях, и в разных часовых поясах,я хотела узнать разницу во времени (we live in different halves of the Earth, and in different time zones, I wanted to know the difference in time)

I know . I wish my Russian skills were better. Everything that I know I taught myself (through books and other methods) because they canceled the Russian class at my college because not a lot of people signed up for it. I have to suffer because of that haha. oh well there is always next year!

Here, сколько у вас сейчас времени? means "what time is it where you are?" i.e., in your time zone. Not "how much time do you (personally) have."

I also have another question how come Russians type ")))" after each sentence. I noticed the few that I talk to online seem to do that and I've been curious as to what the meaning behind that is. Maybe someone can enlighten me .

verry well, as soon as the inpiration come I shall draw without fail
but I draw only by pencil or pen, (they are\will be) not colored (black and white) - will it be ok?

And Russians type ))) and all that : ) ; ) =) : P because they are SMS maniacs and adore to send messages from their cell phones all the time!

Crassyo, I long ago was also confused with )))) all the time, and it is because Russians are lazy and don't put the whole smiley "", and if they are very happy they "add smiles, )".

E.G.: in Russian is )))

Simpler, no?

Wow, I've always thought that people all over the world use it the same way, that it's common. My world-view is shattering. )))))
PS. It's closer to laughing, as Zaya said (the more brackets you add, the louder is laughter ), but sometimes it can be used to express happiness.

I don't chat that much anymore, but I believe it is a distinctly slavic expression I must agree that it is a very efficient way to chat! I'm sure it will become the gold standard pretty soon!
