Thread: hard to understand

ok, i have an odd sentence and really dont know what to make of the second half. here goes:

Вставка из каленого стекла шириной 60 мм на высоту 2,75 м была применена между капитальным проемом стены и конструкцией стеклянной маятниковой двери.

what i dont get (presuming каленого стекла is some special reinforced glass) is капитальным проемом стены и конструкцией стеклянной маятниковой двери

i know that маятник is pendulum, what something about pendulum doors just sounds wrong and the first half makes me think of glass going into wall spaces which is just all kinds of wrong!

if someone could just explain in other words wtf these things are i would be really grateful

I may only suppose that this piece of glass was inserted between concrete wall of doorway and door's axis to satisfy requirements on door dimensions, doorway dimension and do not block the view with some opaque stuff like bricks.

Маятниковая дверь is a door that can be opened to both sides - it has no door-post(?) blocking its movement in other direction, and may swing for a while if released when open.

"Капитальный" in construction is sometimes used to refer to strong, solid parts of a structure (usually brick, construction stone, or concrete) as opposed to wooden/glass/gypsum/chipboard elements. Most often, "капитальный" implies "load-bearing."

So, imagine a solid brick or concrete wall which has an opening (doorway) 3 meters wide. the actual metal frame holding a set of swing doors is, however, 2.4. meters wide. So you have a 60 centimeters-wide gap between the wall and the frame. The gap is covered by a piece of reinforced glass.

Does it make sense now?
