Thread: ПОМОГИТЕ МНЕ ПОЖАЛУЙСТА.

Hi. Can anyone help with this? It's an article I have to translate, but there are a few phrases I'm having trouble with.

1. Убийство перуанского студента ... cтало тяжелым знаковым событием для всей Рооссии. (I'm thinking - The murder of the Peruvian student ... was a seriously significant event for all of Russia).

2. Кто такие бьющие? (Who are the attackers? - perhaps.)

3. Необходимо ли городу покаяне?

4. Новость ... стала одной из главных на лентах информационных агенств. (The news became one of the most important on the tapes of the information agencies. - Something like this? But it doesn't seem quite right.)

5. Реакция, которая последовала в Воронеже, если честно, насторожила.

6. Непонятно, ксенофобия ето или хулиганство, нацисты или элементарные гопики? (The fact that this is a question is making the grammar difficult for me. And what on earth is an elementary yob?)

Correct, although "stalo" can also mean "is" in official contexts. Also, знаковое can also mean 'symbolic'.

2. Кто такие бьющие? (Who are the attackers? - perhaps.)

Again, correct.

3. Необходимо ли городу покаяне?

Does the city need repentance? If покаяне actually means покаянИе.

4. Новость ... стала одной из главных на лентах информационных агенств. (The news became one of the most important on the tapes of the information agencies. - Something like this? But it doesn't seem quite right.)

The news became of the main headlines of news agencies.

5. Реакция, которая последовала в Воронеже, если честно, насторожило.

In all honesty, the reaction, which followed in Voronezh, alarmed many people. (closest translation I could think of for "nastorozhilo")

6. Непонятно, ксенофобия ето или хулиганство, нацисты или элементарные гопики? (The fact that this is a question is making the grammar difficult for me. And what on earth is an elementary yob?)

It is unclear whether this was xenophobia or just hooliganism, Nazis or mere gopniks

Keep in mind, Gena, that when you write in Russian with Latin letters, you hardly can get corrections.

"Eto yasno seechas" is wrong. In Cyrillics it would be "Это ясно сейчас". "Сейчас" is a wrong word here. It means "at this very moment, right now". So it sounds like you understood something, but you'll forget it in five minutes.
We usually say "Теперь понятно (or теперь ясно)". And without "это".
