As far as I know (but I`m not a native speaker), неужто is the same as неужели: it is an adverb and means "really, is it possible, indeed, can it be true?, is that so?".

I think it'll be "и" if only you emphasize this word. I tried to say it several times and I guess it's more "e" then "и". I'm not sure though.Originally Posted by chaika
