in this case verb "выходить" must understanding as "to result"

(In my notes) prosecutor and jury came out as some kind of beasts, counselor as sickly-sweet and me as a lamb.
*Не знаю, нужно здесь "as" или нет.

My first guess is that they "turned out to be freaks," that is "unreasonable, idiotic folks."

No, they might be nice people. It's just they looked like animals on the drawing the artist made during the court session.

No, the author just means that his description turned out to be exaggerated or even wrong (and he didn't want it to be that way). He told the story as if the prosecutor and juty were overly cruel (like a pack of wild beasts), a councelor was too sugary, and he was a hapless victim, a picture of innocence and maybe naive stupiduty.

It's just they looked like animals on the drawing the artist made during the court session.

From the tone it's obvious that it was not a drawing, but some kind of account or notes. You can't actualy draw a person as a candy, can you?
