How many years you all have been studying Russian?

    Hello everyone.
Just wanted to find out how many years you all have been studying Russian.
As for me, I am a first year student studying on my own with only the help of music, textbooks, and of course this forum. I started studying in early August 2004 so I almost completed 1 year of study.
I think I made decent progress since then.
    Thanks for all your help.

Even when I used to nuzzle inside my mom, still unborn but completely formed baby boy, the outside world had been making a huge imprint of the Russian language upon me. By now it's something about a quarter of the century that I am mastering and polishing my mother tongue and thinking how good it is not to study this language as a foreign one...

I've been studying less than 2 years - when I lived in Las Vegas I took Russian I and II at the Community College of Southern Nevada. I recommend those classes for anyone in the Vegas valley.

I've been self-studying for just over a year, but I didn't study at all for several months. I kicked it into high gear when I decided to go to Moscow, but between selling all of my possessions, paperwork, etc. I haven't studied as much as I'd like. As soon as I finish selling my latest (and hopefully last) website to a client, I'm hoping to basically study Russian for 6-8 hours per day. I finally got a Russian teacher about 2.5 months ago who I see once per week, Pitr native, but she really only teaches me grammar (so far).

If I'm lucky, I'll be going back to Germany before leaving for Moscow, and my old host family there are all Eastern Germans who speak Russian at home, which I think would be a lot better than a few more one-hour Russian lessons!

Moscow in August...and boy am I ready to go!

For the past several months I've been studying independently, and I confess I need to kick myself to study more as well. I'm trying to commit to a regular schedule. The local community college doesn't offer classes until Fall. . . . but I'm going to find a tutor soon.
If only you could see . . . what I have seen, with your eyes.

I studied the basics for a couple weeks earlier this year. Unfortunately I had ran out of resources and stopped learning, so at the moment I can't remember most of it. It seems like I recognize words at random sometimes though. Even if I were to study it im afraid ill confuse it with my German(Ill start taking it next year. Ill be able to complete German 1 & 2 this school year, then 3 & 4 my junor year, then 5 my senior ).

Two years.... I've done a somewhat crazy thing - after one year of learning very basic Russian I decided that I want to study applied linguistics at university and learn to translate in two languages. (The choice of the first one was obvious as I've been learning English for over ten years now.) My first choice of the second language was German, as I've learned it for three years then, but after an interview in a language school I realised that I don't really know much of it, so I decided I'll ... learn Russian in a year! I bought several texbooks and spent a few hours a day with them. It seems that it payed off - I chose Russian as one of my final high school exam subjects, and I got 95% which is way above the average according to the statistics. (Forgive me the boasting ;p ) So I hope they'll take me ;p I really don't want to study anything else .... All in all it wasn't THAT hard to learn basic Russian, but I guess that's because my native language is Polish which is similiar at many points... sure there are many false friends ;p but at least I'm used to inflection, declension, conjunction and stuff :PPP поздравляю всех :P (aargh my language icon is gone, damn Windows)

the poll doesnt really make sense. In essence, if i have only been learning russian for 1 day, i could select anything from between less than 1 years to less than 5 years.
Вот это да, я так люблю себя. И сегодня я люблю себя, ещё больше чем вчера, а завтра я буду любить себя to ещё больше чем сегодня. Тем что происходит,я вполне доволен!

    Define "Study".

My first Russian class was around 1958. Then college, then grad school.... then all along more or less connected with Russian studies..., taught Russian, worked as a translator. Then formal study in 2003 in Moscow for a month to brush up on my colloq. Russian, not too successfully. Итого - more than 5 years.

Less than one year, but it's sticking...Luckily four years of Latin (WHY!??) helped me to get a grasp on the grammar very quickly - not memorizing it, but just understanding how it works - surprisingly, many endings for each case are the same as the Latin equivalent... But I found it much easier just to learn each word as you go along, and once you've read the word used in different ways, you start to get an underlying sense of how they should be
