    Russian boarding schools

Are Russian boarding schools more harsh on a student than American boarding schools? Are the punishments more sever than detention or "work hours" as we call them at my school- we have to work around campus in the theatre cleaning the stage, in the dorms cleaning the laundry room, in the classrooms getting gum off the desks and writing off of the chairs, etc...

Wow!! During my school days in Moscow those punishments were almost unheard of. The worst was calling the parents to school and speaking with them. The smallest was writing a note to your notebook (дневник) to be reviewed by your parents. Does anybody have another experience?

I wish the punishments were as simple as that- but we get them just for missing classes or school events like church or choir, or even being late by two minutes to a class or not signing in to dinner on weekdays... T_T I had four "work hours" today- I had to plant flowers around the campus and weed all of the many gardens @_@ with only a few people in my group... we managed to get about half the campus done...

What kind of boarding school are you attending? Sounds pretty strict, or you are being very mischievous!

Please PM me with details so I can threaten my 13 yr old son.
Correct my Russian, please! Пожалуйста, исправьте мои ошибки!

Wow, that's harsh! =) I used to be late to school on a regular basis, never had any troubles because of that, except of a few notes in my 'diary". As Crocodile said it was the most common way for a teacher to show his/her displeasure. Well, some of them could also screem at you. Pfft..
Another "punishment" (mostly in primary school) was turning out of the classroom till the end of the lesson ("выгнать из класса") for misbehaving.

Though I must admit, that we had to work at school too. The thing is in most cases it wasn't a punishment, but a mandatory duty.

For example, we had to tidy up our classroom every day after classes (to mop down the floors, to water the plants, etc.). It was boring, but not exhausting (the whole operation took 15-20 minutes). Each one of us had to do this once in about 3 weeks (simple math: 30 kids in the class working in pairs = working once in 15 school days). Not a big deal, but it probably would be if our teachers named it "a punishment".

Also we had summer duties ("практика"), which were vehemently hated. In the beginning of the three-month summer vacation we had to work at school for a couple of hours a day for about two weeks. In our school we watered roses in the school yard (we had a huge rosarium. Evil flowers!) and helped sorting textbooks in the library.

That's all. Can't remember anything else. No scary stories.

    PS. Oh! Субботники!

Ah! The nice way to do away with that used to be leaving for a summer pioneer camp. Worked for me!

Nice! А меня ни разу не отправили в пионерлагерь! 95% моих друзей тоже торчали все лето дома.
Наверное, потому, что мы жили у моря, и родители считали глупостью отправлять детей "с курорта" куда-то еще.

what are "Субботники"? And your punishments really aren't too bad... But a punishment is a punishment... they're all super annoying... Even though it's the end of the year they still gave me a work hour because, my bed wasn't "made to military standard".... it's the last week... what am I supposed to do?? So they told me to report to the "dungeon"(the latin classroom is in a basement) and help my teacher grade papers...

"Субботники" were held in every organisation once or twice a year, usually in spring (late April or early May). Employees (and in our case teachers and students) worked together, cleaning nearby territory from all the garbage that was hidden under the snow during winter months (paper, last year leaves, butts, etc.), painting park benches anew, trenching the ground under the trees or planting the new ones and such.

Usually nobody liked it, because "субботник" obviously was announced at Saturday, and it meant 4 to 8 hours of extra work (dirty and boring) in your week-end. The good thing they were held only once or twice a year, as I said. "Субботники" still exist, but they are not as widespread as before.

PS. Your school sounds really horrible.

Subbotniki sound awful!! And the punishments are about the only bad thing that's at my school- when you're like me(always getting into trouble)it makes things kind of harder... the curriculum, dance, acting programs are awesome... and my friends are pretty cool...

We received a note and our parents had to sign it. And sometimes you had to come to school on a wednesday afternoon (free afternoon normal) and you had to write write write write write

When I was older I had 2 wednesday afternoons and we had to update the website of the school and publish articles for the school newspaper. That was because we studied something in IT, other students had to clean the school. Cleaning chewing gum was the most horrible task I think.

Oh, much hated praktika!! Early in the morning and always in the most beuatiful summer days. When I was a schooler, boys had to take part in school renovation and all the hard work outside the building. So many years after that torture it doesn't seem so hard. But tell it to a young boy who wants to forget everything connected to schools when the sun shines in the sky...

Да, блин, "практика" это ужас! Особенно, когда тебя заставляют работать со "старшаками"!
Но мы и в летнем лагере тоже занимались уборками территории и даже каждый день поливали огород. Тоже не слишком весёлые занятия!
