раз is not "time" in these examples, it is "one". Tell him it is like "love" in tennis-- just another way to say "zero". Used mostly in counting things. And in nursery rhymes:

Раз, два, три, четыре, пять
Вышел Зайчик погулять.
Вдруг охотник выбегает -
Прямо в Зайчика стреляет:
Пиф-паф!
Ой-ой-ой!
