    Ого/Его

Does anyone know (or care to hazard a guess) why the г in ого/его is sometimes prounounced as a в (e.g. нового or него)? I'm not interested in knowing the words that do this, but rather the reason/origin for this seemingly odd mutation.
Заранее благодарю всех за исправление ошибок в моём русском.

Why sometimes? It is ALWAYS pronounsed in that manner...

You pronounce огон like овон!?!?!?! That's just the quickest one I could come up with, but there are many, many other cases of this...

Of course not Огонь is pronounced Огонь. If you want to know the reason why is г pronounced as в, as far as i know in the old Russian/ Slavic language it was pronounced as г , that way it is and was written but the pronouncation changed as the language got developed with the time.

    Re: Ого/Его

On ending of the word (-его/-ого) it is alway pronounsed in that manner.
Why? Because it's a regulation of Russian language.
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

    I don't think so.

Exactly. I'm not interested in the rule itself -- I'm interested in WHY the rule exists in the first place. It's not some question of great significance, but it is something that I'm curious about.

    если ударение стоит перед двойными согласными, то тогда произносится долгий согласный звук: гр[п]а, если после - то согласный произносится без долготы: а[к]ордео'н?;

    3. Произношение некоторых грамматических форм:

    - в окончаниях родительного падежа прилагательных и местоимений пишется 'г', а произносятся как [в]: мило[ва], че[в]о; то же орфоэпическое правило распространяется на слова сегодня (и производные от него), итого,

So basically noone here can explain how it came to be that the gen. sg. ого/его is pronounced with a /v/ instead of a /g/. In the dialects you will find people who have something not a /v/ in there. Both northern and southern. I think in the north it's a /g/ and in the south it's like a voiced English /h/ (or Greek γ), not sure though. Not my field. I think the southern variant occurs in Ukrainian and Belorussian.

It's language changing over time. There are lots of things in the Russian language that you can ask "why?" about. Why is it булка in Moscow but батон in Petersburg? Why is хотеть declined as a first conjugation verb in the singular хочу хочешь хочет but a second conjugation verb in the plural хотим хотите хотят? But you gotta go to grad school to learn this stuff.

I had to add that (as Оля said) the truly Moscow pronunciation isn't a thing you can easily hear today even in the Moscow streets. That belongs to the older generation of the citizents. My Geography teacher had such pronunciation. By widespread opinion the most evident Moscow pronunciation belonged to the famous Russian actor Z.Gerdt (Зиновий Ефимович Гердт (1916-1996)).
    Я так думаю.
