Домашние обязанности и традиции в разных странах

Это оффтопик от темы Happy Thanksgiving, America!

This reminds me of a salad that has always been the biggest hit on holiday tables in the former Soviet Union. Actually it remains extremely popular nowadays. I even cannot imagine a holiday without this salad. We call it “olivye” after the name of Belgian Lucien Olivier, the chef of the Hermitage, one of Moscow’s most celebrated restaurants. It is called Russian salad worldwide, though. It is made of sausage, potatoes, carrots, boiled eggs, canned peas, green and pickled cucumbers, spring and large onions, and it is dressed with mayonnaise.

Sorry, my post has nothing to do with Thanksgiving.

This thread reminds me of a funny experience I had when I was living in Russia. This was waaaaay back during Glasnost/Perestroika - so some of you younger folks may need to drag out the history books))).

Anyway, I decided to have a Thanksgiving dinner and I invited all my Russian friends. There were no turkeys available in St. Petersburg (Leningrad!!) at that time, so I bought the biggest chicken I could find and used that. I also couldn't find a pumpkin, so I found a squash that kinda looked like a pumpkin - except it was green - and made quasi-pumpkin pie out of that.

Then after we had all eaten the sumptuous feast, I informed the men that it was American tradition for the men to wash the dishes on Thanksgiving, since the women prepare the food. But all of the men refused! They said it was "women's work" and that Russian men NEVER do dishes! Yes, seriously.

    Ahhh, fun times!
Вот потому, что вы говорите то, что не думаете, и думаете то, что не думаете, вот в клетках и сидите. И вообще, весь этот горький катаклизм, который я здесь наблюдаю, и Владимир Николаевич тоже…

Do you really think Russian men have changed since then?

I know that even cats can be trained, though they are very stubborn and independent animals. Perhaps man is not a tougher animal. Do you think women can make doing dishes a male’s conditioned reflex by using reinforcing stimulus each time like, let’s say, sex?

Well, I trained my cat to use the toilet! So there is hope for human males everywhere! If they are as smart as a cat, that is )) Of course, sex is always a good reward!

o.O that would take a lot of thinking but I guess I could if more people are interested!

@Lena that salad sure sounds a little like it. I wouldn't be surprised if our potato salad had some roots in Europe.

On another note, this thread has certainly taken a funny turn.... (training cats to use the potty and men to do the dishes....)

The fact that women all over the world think alike gladdens me a lot.

I do the washing up every day and consider it the easiest and the most pleasant work.

Your wife must've perfectly trained you to do that, and even more - to enjoy that. May I ask her to share her experiences?

Oh, I have to apologize, Joy. That's perhaps the only thing I I don't like about this site. People are faceless here. I definitely feel uncomfortable being unaware of a person's gender, country of living, native language, target language, age (at least approximately, like 20-30 or 30-40).

Btw, the Russian language has its advantages over English in this regard. If Joy were Russian she would say in her post #13

После того, как я вчера вернулась, я думаю, я так наелась, что заснула.

    instead of the original

After I got back last night I think I ate so much that I was falling asleep.

And I would be certain of her gender.

‘Бить сковородкой по башке’ is both a popular ‘quick fix’ and long-term conditioning method practiced by some loving women out there. You may give it a go.

‘Заехать по морде чайником’ may be considered as its less common counterpart yet perpetuated in the popular street song performed below.

I don’t think Marcus’s wife sticks to such brutal methods. I’m sure she motivates him in a more delicate way.
