    A silly question

How did the title on my nick change from Новичок (the beginner?) to Подающий надежды оратор.

I'm not sure I understand what it means.

    Does it mean promising speaker?

it means you have been posting more...those titles are dependant on the number of posts.

    Oh. Now I get it.

It's like a rank or status on the forum.

It was good humored joke Tradakad. Both men know this. A subtle joke. Not a harm--at all. He did NOT say "that is silly" he say, "that is prettttttty silly". The change of word "pretty" to "pretttttttttty" is clue of joke. Joke in good way. Not joke in bad way.

In English it is called sarcasm. (subtle joke) I took no offense to his reply.

Interesting idea. So what would you say is the difference between a joke in a good way and a joke in a bad way`?

I think Rosa meant that it was not a mean joke. It was a friendly joke.

I thought his was a jocular reply, not to the level of negativity carried by sarcasim.

    Kamion,
A joke in a good way is like: What do you call a Swede with two brain cells? Pregnant.
A joke in a bad way is like: What do you call a Norwegian with two brains cells? Pregnant.

For you, it might be the other way around.

Yes, BladeStuckin, you are correct that is what I meant because the guy seemed to take offense to the communication, yet has only been speaking English for a month (I think I read that somewhere). I don't know, maybe the other guy "was" being sarcastic but I didn't read it that way.

Before I sifted through all the latter posts, I didn't know for sure whether or not is was purely humour or a snappy smart-a@@ sarcasm response. That's the nature of internet. You can't see the person when they say it, which is why we have emoticons. (the 'ha ha ha' at the end of the remark, though I assumed probably asserting the humour, some people actually ARE that much over-the-top sarcastic that they'd feel the need to be scithing with over-kill 'ha ha ha's'). I wrote a couple of humourous posts to someone I knew here, and a newby thought I was being high and mighty. Easy mistake. Sometimes the posters themselves don't even know if they're joking fully. Humour can be spiked with hostility. It happens. I think some people over-compensate with too many emoticons, whereas others can under-use them. I sometimes re-edit emoticons in/out of posts because of this.
The fragile art of net-speak (whoops, wrong emoticon . Should I edit it it out? )

Is this from the "Borat" TV show? Yegshemesh!
