Actually it's more simply than this. If you use the international layout you don't even have to switch back and forth for five Western European languages at least.
But when you need a complete different layout you do just exactly like you said.

i have finally gotten russian keyboard on my pc. but. but!

i haven't been using the proper russian keyboard for so long (i was using translit to type in russian), that i already completely forgot how to use it, and where the letters are, and so on. it takes me way longer to type a russian phrase in the "reply" window in russian, than opening a new IE window, loading translit.ru, and typing there in latin, and copying and pasting back here...

my point is: does anybody know a good (free!) resource to learn russian keyboard?

Мой совет: сделай рисунок русской клавиатуры в натуральную величину и, когда печатаешь, смотри на него. Обещаю, что после нескольких десятков постов будешь нормально печатать по-русски, а после нескольких сотен - быстро. Конечно, при условии, что держишь пальцы правильно.

Hundred thousands of people are in the same situation - both native speakers (like me) and say members of http://AATSEEL.com
AND none of us uses time consuming ways of typing Russian on a Web site.

Instead, we use THE BEST method - regular system keyboard tools and type with 'RU' in taskbar - in the 'translit' mode -
A-A,B-Б,D-Д,F-Ф,K-K,O-O,.... - That is, I type Russian in the same way I type English (handy! easier to switch mentally) - getting letter 'A' of each of the languages by pressing 'A' on my keyboard (with 'EN' and 'RU' respectevely), getting 'O' by pressing 'O' button, etc.

It helps A LOT at work where people can not mark their office keyboard with Russian letters.

This is called Phonetic or Homophonic or Transliterated keyboard layout (was invented by some guys back in 1997!) and for example is offered officially to the members of AATSEEL and also used WIDELY among people from the former USSR.

This layout is modifiable, that is, if you don't like that the author placed Russian 'В' onto 'W' and you'd rather had it on 'V' - you can do it.

Again, it is NOT a program, it's just a small file with Phonetic layout that works with regular system keyboard tools.

It can be done under both Windows 95/98/ME and under Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 and takes 3 minutes:

i used to type russian as fast as english, but not any more. i will learn! yay!

Можно каждый раз, когда нужна прописная буква, нажимать её одновременно с ней.
