What OS does your phone use? I believe that in most, if not all, cases you need to completely replace the original OS version to a localized one that allows texting in cyrillics. Either way, your question can't be answered without knowing your phone's model and OS.

    Hi

its a samsung omnia 16gb running on windows mobile 6.1 for professional. I would just like to have the option of writing texts in Russian however I would prefer that the phone language remains in English.

    Thanks,
    Eoghan

There is a number of so-called "Rusificators" for WM 6.1 floating around on the Net, but, unfortunately, they are all hardware-specific, and I couldn't find any that would work on your phone. I am afraid you are out of luck. But you can try yourself, because new software for mobiles phones appears every day. Who knows, maybe you'll find something.
Of course, there are quite a few phone repair shops in Moscow that would be happy to replace your OS with a Russian or russified version (for a fee, of course ), but I guess that is not an option for you.

If your phone does not already have cyrillic/latin keypad it will be very difficult for you to use any way.

True. That is less of a problem in Moscow, because some of the repair shops that can change your phone's software can also engrave cyrillic letters on the keyboard — at least I have seen ads claming that. But a foreign resident will have to know the keyboard layout by heart.

Eoghan, the most simple solution is to use translit.
