Thread: Where to buy classic Russian novels in the original Russian?

Hi,
Where do people here find they get the best prices (and selection) on classic Russian novels in the original Russian? Just curious if there is kind of a "go-to" site for books written in Russian, comparable to Amazon and Abebooks for books written in English.

Maybe it would help to mention the country where you live. We have several sources for Russian books here in Germany, for example, and even amazon.de has some in the original Russian.

I am in Canada, but I'm willing to buy from anywhere in the world that offers good selection and best prices after shipping. I have a US mail forwarding address so I can buy from American places like Amazon.com that refuse to ship to Canada.

Honestly would be surprised if any EU country was best source for this, given the large VAT but I could be wrong. I was thinking perhaps someplace in India if anyone knows any? Or another low-overhead country.

Yeah I agree the books are cheap, but the shipping from Russia to Canada is incredibly expensive, at least on ozon.ru... total cost ends up being roughly the same as amazon.

Still the selection is better there than on Amazon for Russian language stuff.

Any other sites, besides ozon.ru? Who are ozon's main competitors?

you can search amazon and abebooks with latin letters instead of cyrillic - it's not a great method but it returns results e.g. ruski or gramatica

High quality? Ты о новых изданиях говоришь? Они весьма дурного качества... Раза три прочитаешь - книга уже износится, порвётся. Старые-то книги, изданные во время советского союза, очень хорошие - до гроба тебя проводят. Их покупать можно иногда по 30 рублей у буикнистов.

У меня есть прочные книги из издательств Дрофа, ACT, и Престиж Книги. Дрофа, в частности, издает красивые книги.

The strange thing is that ozon.ru shipping is more than triple the cost of books.ru shipping. (700 rubles shipping on ozon.ru compared to 200 rubles shipping on books.ru) If only books.ru had the edition I want...

There are a number of used books available on of all places eBay! Some are complete collect series like FEDOR DOSTOEVSKII 12 Volumes Russian Books Works 1982 and some just single copy like USSR book Dostoevsky Crime and Punishme in Russian,1983 (starting price .99) .... all I did was type in Russian Books and then under subject you can select "classic" or another type like poetry.
