знаковый as in знаковое явление в нашей жизни.
The word I hate!
It has been some time now since this word came into circulation in mass media. You’d think Pushkin himself gave birth to it seeing how often it’s used nowadays on radio and TV. But I think the story of its origin was a little bit more prosaic. I think it happened thusly:
Once upon a time Ястержемский - one of our political figures of not so distant past, presumably recovering from a previous night’s party was answering a reporters question concerning some significant event in Russia’s economy. The event was probably so significant that he was trying his best to pick up the word that could properly emphasize this significance, but couldn’t remember one however hard he tried. Desperately probing his mind for the word in question he ultimately came up with знаковый, blurted it out only a moment later to realize that what he wanted to say was значимый. Bootlick reporters picked it up and set it in motion. Henceforth it has been gaining momentum all along.
What my fellow citizens think about it?
Maybe someone knows better and will clear things up a bit so that I could stop despising the word so much.
