Question What is an Academy in Ukraine?

Hi everyone! This is an awesome forum!

Ok I have a question, my girlfriend lives in Kremenchug, Ukraine. She recently told me she is a teacher at a local "Academy". So I took that seriously. But then she told me she teaches Food Technology - well in USA when I hear Food Technology I equate that with teaching courses at a Trade School on fast food preparation, to help someone start work at McDonalds or Pizza Hut etc.

Trade schools train various trades - for quick entry - like Electrician, Plumber, Office Work, Fitness & Nutrition. They are designed to teach entry level skills, so people can go straight to work.

But this weekend, I realized she must be teaching at a higher level, because she is just returning from a pretty advanced week-long conference where she had to speak and give reports, and go to many classes. So I'm thinking she is a college professor now, until she told me her monthly salary is $40.00. My jaw dropped! But the low salary confused me even more.

If she is a professor shouldn't she be teaching at a higher level like a university? So my question is, in Ukraine what indicates an Academy versus a University? And what level of education do you need to teach at a Ukraine Academy?

Thanks so much for your time, sorry for the long post. I didn't know how else to ask the question. : )

It doesn't get any better than an Academy. A University is lower in rank. The difference between them is in number of highly qualified teachers. Well, that's it in a nutshell.
I do not claim that my opinion is absolutely true.

Oh thanks iCake! So if you had to guess, what level education does my girlfriend have, if she teaches at the local academy?? In USA it goes, Trade School, Bachelors Degree, Master Degree, then Doctorate Degree.
And why the low salary, if she has a high level education?

LOL I'm going to just ask her when she returns home. All this is just my own curious research. : ))))

She can have any level of education in the Ukraine. Names such as "academy" don't mean anything over there. As far as salary goes, only mobsters, politicians and paramilitaries have high salaries, all the rest are poor; it's simply another world...

Hi iCake. I asked my girl when she returned home from conference what her level of education is, she said she has Masters and is working on her PhD. That surprised me. I knew she was very intelligent but I was surprised she only makes $40 a month. Oh well, now I know.

    Does this academy has name?
I cannot google anything related to food in Kremenchug, except "self-proclaimed nothing-to-do-with-science-or-business women associacion of chief-cookers like 'Academy of tasty and healthy food') . It is strange.

    Proof: http://www.telegraf.in.ua/kremenchug...ani_10293.html

В Кременчуге создана Международная академия любителей вкусной, хорошей еды. Ее презентация совпала с Днем Татьяны.
"World (!) Academy of Tasty and Good Food Lovers" is created in Kremenchug at Tatiana's Day.
