    Vladimir Vysоtsky

Anyone here a fan of this mans music or films?

I have only recently discovered him and I'm currently translating all his songs after a Lithuanian friend send me a CD with most of his albums. (I'm not using a translator but doing it the hard way in order to help me learn Russian).

I just wondered if anyone here also enjoyed his work.

He's still quite popular, especially among older people. The young generation mostly has other tastes in music, but even among them you hardly can find a person who don't know about Vysоtsky.

I liked him a lot when I was about 8 or 9 y/o, but once when I was at home alone I listened to my favourite song by Vysоtsky for about 4 hours again and again - 50 or 60 times in row (I liked it so much), but as a result I couldn't listen to his songs anymore, I felt almost nauseous (I think it was overdose). So I'm rather indifferent to him.

But there are a few topics on this forum devoted to V.

(34 pages of Vysоtsky lyrics in Russian and English and mp3 links).

Why "was"? По-русски я бы тоже не сказала "был".

Can one say "Shakespeare is a great person" or it's wrong in English?

That would depend on what you believe!

You do say 'was' about a person who has died. However, you can also say 'is' if you prefer to believe that death doesnt stop a person being great.

    So either way is fine.

    I hope that helps.

Why Vysоtsky, and not Vysоtsky, or better yet, Vysоtski?
Well, I don't know what to say. I want to say thanks to the Academy, to Mama, to Papa and to my dog. I love you all.

I think forum engine replace "o" in Vys.tsky with "." on his own volition. I typed it correctly in my post and it came out as Vys.tsky too.
