You know, I can't speak for everyone obviously (so I'll just do it for all Americans ). It struck me as somewhat interesting when I was studying and visiting Russia how Russians tend to have a different general view of Africa. It's obviously not a perfect comparison, but I think you would find that Americans would tend to view Austrailia in the same sense as Russians do Africa -- a very tropical area, with tons of exotic flora and fauna with an unusual set of customs and history -- the kind of place you'd want to go on vacation. I think it's safe to say that if you polled Americans as to what the most unusual or exotic or adventurous place they'd like to go on a vacation, Australia would win hands-down. Now contrast that with the general perception of Africa here, however accurate or fair it may be, as a continent in perpetual turmoil, poverty, epidimic, and war. Guess why no one (and only that means only we Americans, the important people on this earth, whose opinions I've completely incorporated into this paragraph and spoken for -- AND YES THAT IS SARCASM ) wants to go to Africa: Kangaroos and guys with funny accents at the Sydney Opera House vs. Guys with AIDS shooting their AK-47's at you. That's very much the perception, I'd say.

So... Australia is to Americans what Africa is to Russians?

Heh, not sure who's getting insulted or complimented in that comparison, but it's one I'll certainly remember!

As you say, I can't speak for everyone obviously but I'd say you are overstating a bit. My attitude towards Africa is somewhat similar to that which you describe as general American one I definitely don't want to go to Africa. On the other hand, Australia isn't very appealing to me either (but probably more appealing, nevertheless).
Anyway, I think Russians realize that Australia is also 'a very tropical area, with tons of exotic flora and fauna with an unusual set of customs and history.' But that doesn't necessarily mean 'the kind of place you'd want to go on vacation.' Actually I'd prefer Europe to the tropics in this respect.

And now on the "serious" note, the number one country I'd like to visit is Bhutan

How come you've never visited Russia, swedish serb?

If i should be completely honest whit you i was planing on doing it. But other plans came up. Next year hopefully i will visit Moscow and St.Petersburg.

Then i plan to take the Trans-Siberian Railroad and cross the whole country that is my biggest wish.

1) Anywhere I have never travelled to with work and that I can get to without flying.

2) Right now Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Maybe even Central Asia. So much to see that it's hard to know where to start. I'm actually planning such a trip, for the spring. Long trip.

2) Actually, somewhere where people can speak Russian.... but very poorly, so that I could try speaking Russian without feeling like an idiot with real native speakers. (That worked for me with English when I was in my teens.)
