Hello, I'd like to know your opinions.

Do you find the use of the word "woman" in the following context offensive?


"I don't want to go out tonight, I have work tomorrow"
"Ah, come on mate, don't be a woman. It'll be fun!"

Слово "женщина" само по себе совсем не обидное, но намерение обидеть человека, называя его "женщиной", неприятно и плохо характеризует того, кто пытается это делать.

There is no намерения обидеть человека in that one, just buddy talk.

I think US citizens will go nuts in their desire to be as PC as possible.

I think it isn't an offensive answer.... His mate is just joking!!!

Conversely, if you are a woman, and someone says you are "acting/look like a man" would you find that offensive? It's simply intentionally classifying someone of one sex as another to give them a hard time -- it's should hardly be offensive to anyone else. Sheesh.

I just don't see the point of using the word woman here. Do you insinuate that women don't go out when they have to work the day after?

There you go, it's not offensive, it's complimentary to women. Women are responsible human beings and we are not.

Well, I got in trouble once for saying something similar. So I voted for "offensive"

PS: My friend was arrived at the campground with his car and started unpacking. He had hundreds of bags just for a overnight stay. "You are such a woman!" I told him. Too bad his gf overheard me...

Next time try something more PC, like "You are such an X-chromosome person!"

It's not offensive. All this sexism is a crock of sh*t. If I lived in America, I would beat that cr*p out of all the feminists over there.

That in itself isn't offensive, but general sexism is, in my opinion. Some people actually think women are less capable than men and it irritates me.

I'm female, and I couldn't care less, to be honest.
I think there's far too much of this crazy thing called political correctness these days. Of course you have to respect each other (whether you be male, female, or convertible), of course you have to be correct to one another.
But this is not a request for "correctness" anymore, it's oversensitivity.
And lack of sense of humour...... - people should stop taking themselves so seriously.

I think it is important to realize that women and men are different both physically and mentally, and neither should be offended by this difference.

However, making fun of someone's gender is just as bad taste as making fun of someone's skin color or religion. I see sexual harrasment every day at work, and it bothers me (PS: I am not the one getting sexual harrassed ).

I think the comment in question is probably not very offensive if noone overheard the person saying it. If a tree falls in the middle of the forest, etc.

Well, imagine what a male dominated profession it is and what we do to the poor girls who work with us...

You woudn't say this in russian and keep the original implication.
You'd say:
Не будь девочкой.

You'd make russian woman happy if you open a door before her or help her in some other way. They adore the attention of men they draw and just love to get presents. I've heard that this kind of behaviour in USA is considered offensive in some quarters and man risks to be brought in the court for doing such things.

The grossest stupidity! Why on Earth we would deny the fact that there ARE men and there ARE women. And they're different.

To all women: FEMINISM IS THE CREATION OF MEN. IT HELPS TO AVOID MEN'S RESPONCIBILITY FOR A WOMEN.
