i have noticed that (especially on the weekends) there are loads of russian documentaries which are compleatly sensational. eg, бандитский питер, child sex slavery in moscow, prostitution, how the mafia control russia etc. there are soo many programmes like this! sooo depressing!
i asked my teacher and she thinks its to divert peoples attention from other problems in russia. what do you guys think?
It depends on the channel you are watching, but I agree on average there is way too much of depressing programming. I don't think it has anything to do with an attempt to distract people's attention from other problems. For that purpose they traditionally use happy programs. I think part of the problem is purely money, a lot of people watch criminal stuff and it makes commercial time more expensive. To some extent it's also still an echo of glasnost, especially when we talk of documentaries, i.e. there is a numberof honest reporters who feel obliged to tell people the truth, all the truth no matter how sad it is...
Tell me, do you want your news to be about girls called Mandy picking flowers? People want scandal, people want smut, people want blood. After all, it's only human nature.

People like that "чернуха" stuff. The desensitization comes quickly. I'm not fond of this kind of shows but can watch them without any emotion.
I watch all the smut and blood shows on Russian TV. It is good for learning Russian as it is easier to figure out what is being said.

Just don't watch TV at all. I disconnected cable TV at all. Who needs those talking heads and loads of stupid commercials, smut and blood?

The most peaceful programs on TV are ads. You can see smiles of children, grace of animals, beauty of the nature. These ads get the lion's share of the time, but they are also a kind of boring, though.

I agree , Im from south africa and I have noticed the way that western media portrays africa, u swear everywhere you go you are going to be shot at , attacked by viscious animals or caught up in some tribal dispute , lol really people. If you want smut and violence and gore stick to your own country.
