Never heard about this. I know about superstition when you sit at a table between 2 same named person you can make a wish. There are a lot of superstitions though. The basics - spit 3 times over your left shoulder if you dont want something bad you're talking about happened, beware a black cat crossing your way, make a wish when you see a falling star, keep 5 kopeks/rubles coin in you pocket during exams and knock the wood for 3 times to prevent evel spells or "bad glance".
You must not de-skin a pregnant yellow frog or toad at the edge of a forest sitting on a pine or oak tree stump wearing an aqualung and flippers if it's a full moon and there's a group of at least three birch trees in sight and even if you have a half-eaten red herring wrapped in a last week's copy of Komsomolskaya Pravda with your own photo on the front page and a full Linux installation manual tattooed on your left buttock in shorthand by a ginger-haired pot-bellied gypsy sporting a froc coat even if he happens to be impartial to garlic and lollipops. It's a BIG no-no.
I think most common and strong superstition is:
-to sit down for few minutes before a long trip (for good road), and...
-do not whistle inside home (you will loose you money).
I don’t believing in such stuff, but really LOTS of peoples does...
That was great! :thumbs:Quote:

The following superstition is very popular among children and always annoyed me: If you accidently step on somebody's foot he should step on your foot too. If he doesn't then he will have some trouble (by one source) or you will quarrel (by another source).
In Sweden there are some supersticious people too, and popular beleifs include some of the ones JJ wrote about, but hey also believe that you shouldn
I know someone whose nana comes from Cornwall - she once told him that you should say "rrrrrabit" on the first day of the month and woe betide those who don't.
And before I forget, if there's anyone from the theatrical profession here, I just wanted to say the following to you: MACBETH

One more: It a bad luck sign if you meet somebody carrying an empty bucket.

Now I can't go on any trip without sitting on the couch for a few minutes prior to leaving.
I don't really believe either but they're interesting nonetheless
Other superstitions:
Always give flowers in odd numbers, avoid giving them in even numbers.
Don't give as a present yellow flowers if you are not going to say good bye.
Never kiss under the threshold when you are greeting a guest.
Never leave empty bottles over the table after a party.
If somebody tells you your children are beautiful, you should make "chut, chut, chut" to avoid the evil eye.

The spitting 3x thing is also a Greek custom.
Do you guys also have the tradition of tossing salt over the shoulder?
The number 13 is a bad number.
I think it comes from the 13th apostle of Jesus named Judas. Judas betrayed Jesus and had him crucified. (Don't quote me on this one)
Anyway,
Friday the 13th is a bad day. Damn! Today is Friday the 13th. :o
Never buy 13 of anything pens, pencils, apples, potatoes, etc., always buy 12 or 14.
Never stack 13 of anything plates, books, trays etc.
Never put 13 cups in the cupboard.
Never stay on the 13th floor of any building. All the buildings here in Las Vegas skip the 13th floor and go from the 12th floor to the 14th floor.
In general, just avoid the number 13.
No, not salt, chimney soot and rabbit entrails.Quote:

Back in Australia, at the end of the evening I sometimes would toss a shiela over my shoulder but never salt.
Never heard about tossing salt or anything over the shoulder. What's it about?
The widespread superstition that spilling salt brings bad luck is believed to have originated with the overturned salt cellar in front of Judas Iscariot at the Last Supper, an incident immortalized in Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting.
Throwing salt over ones shoulder is supposed to bring luck.
Here are the facts and history of salt.

Another Slavic superstition: Never wear a garment inside out or else somebody will hit you.
Legend says Jesus was the one who overturned the salt cellar before Judas. Salt was considered very valuable in ancient times, and a symbol of wealth and protection, thus it couldn't be wasted.
If you want to overcome bad luck when spilling salt on the table you should throw some grains over your left shoulder to blind the evil spirits.
Superstitions are very ancient, and imbedded in the subconscious collective mind of cultures.
So do supersticious people leave a blank space between floors? :DQuote:

By the bye, it is hard to live knowing everything listed above. You'd better be unborn, after all.
There are thirteen names listed here.Quote:

Simon. More generally known as Peter.
Andrew
James
John
Philip
Bartholomew
Thomas
Matthew
James
Thaddaeus
Simon the Zealot
Judas Iscariot
Matthias
Matthias was only a replacement for Judas and could not have been picked by Jesus.
Not every day alohatherapy.com is used as a source of facts!! LOL!Quote:

So why is 13 considered a bad number? :dunno:
Anyway, another superstition. If you break a mirror, you will have 7 years of bad luck. I must have broken a lifetime of mirrors by now so I guess I am doomed for the rest of my life.
Edit: Here is a link I found on the number 13

That's because if you believe in something you're most likely working towards it.Quote:
