Thread: Russian perceptions of animals

In Russia, what are the common perceptions of different types of animals? Are there phrases, maybe similes and metaphors, that use animals as subjects?

In English, for instance, we have the phrases "weasel out of something" and "worm your way out of something" - roughly "уклоняться", "bee-line" - a direct route, "bear-hug" - really big strong hug, "to have a frog in one's throat" - "иметь ангину" etc. what Russian phrases use animals in a comparison.

In English storytelling and folklore, owls are considered wise, mice are considered timid, lions are strong, tigers are good hunters and eagles have good vision. How does this compare with Russian ideas about animals? Which animals are strong/noble/crafty/evil etc.?

I believe rabbits are considered brave in Russian folklore .

Крутиться как белка в колесе = running around like a blue arsed fly
Медведь на ухо наступил - about a person who is tone-deaf
Злой как собака = very angry
Спать как сурок = sleep like a log
Сова = a person who stays awake till late at night and sleeps late (the same as night-owl I think)
Жаворонок = a person who goes to bed early and wake up early in the morning

Здоровый как лось - long tall big and strong person
хитрый как лиса - a sly dog

голодный как волк - hungry as a wolf
Баран - a stupid person (sheep)

орёл - about a strong bold person

осёл = a stupid stubborn person
козёл = a bad person
козёл отпущения = a fall guy
смотреть как баран на новые ворота = to stare at something not comprehending
мышей не ловит - about a lazy person who doesn't do his job
мартышкин труд = a useless job

подложить свинью = to play a dirty trick on someone
оказать медвежью услугу = to do a disservice to someone
поросячий/телячий восторг = kind of silly delight

нажраться как свинья - to get extremely drunk
заморить червячка - to have a snack

Folklore:
bear - strong, but slow and somewhat dull
wolf - wicked
fox - sly
hare - coward
owl - wise
rooster - brave
dog - honest, devoted
cat - free, independent
cuckoo - careless, irresponsible
(I think these characteristics are quite common for different nations)

Последние 2 недели были просто ужасными, - работал с 6 утра до 8 вечера, домой приходил в 9 как загнанная лошадь. Сил хватало только принять душ и поужинать.

Last two weeks were just awful, I worked from 6 am till 8 pm, got home at 9 pm hella tired. I wasn't capable to do anything apart from taking shower and having dinner.
