Thread: Russian Music Laws?

I noticed that there are many (as in a whole lot) of Russian sites that allow you to download MP3's of songs. Is downloading music from the internet not illegal in Russia? Also I have seen some musicians just put their songs up for download on their websites. This is only furthering my suspicion of non-illegal downloading, as they are putting them up because they figure people will just download them anyway.

And how do you know which sites are good for downloading? We all probably know that it is possible to get viruses from that sort of thing.

As I heard it on TV, currently (till the end of 2007 ) the (weird)law allows any company to act as an agent and sell the music in this way without actually signing an agreement with owner of the right. Or something like this. So they all (or most of them ) are legal.

It's completely illegal but nobody really cares. People won't know much music without the Internet. Good sites are the sites that don't re-direct you somewhere else. That's the main point. Other things depend on your demands.

Downloaing MP3s for free or very little is illegal but the law is no enforced. Music piracy is rife in Russia.

It is illegal unless the author explicitly permits the free downloading.

But who cares?

reminds me of a recent south park episode... i think music piracy is rife all over the world. im equally prolific and downloading all manner of stuff both in russia and england. its easier to buy pirate music and disks here (in the perexods etc) but still, why pay the money for a pirate disk when i can pirate myself one!!
although, i tried to dl an aria song from zaycev the other day and it was blocked! was really surprised, but dint take 5 mins to get it from another site!

I think it should be the other way around.

It is free unless the band forbids it.

But in reality, if it is offered free on the internet then it is none of the bands or record company's business who downloads it. That's the price of "progress"!
The air is free and belongs to everybody .....and so are any signals that go through it.

The likelihood of getting a virus from an MP3 is almost zero.

As long as it isn't .exe then you'll be fine, if you get a virus its probably from the site itself. But as long as you don't use Internet Explorer you won't automatically download every script the site throws at you. I havn't had a virus or a pop up in some 5+ years. Its just about smart surfing.


But as far as good MP3 download sites. Delit.net is a good one.

Theoretically Media Player has some vulnerabilities including buffer overruns and of course, you can get some virus from the site you downloading it from. (If you don't use Internet Explorer and Microsoft Media Player you're fairly safe, I think).
