    Russian Magazines

    Hello

I am a 20 year old student from London and i was wondering if anyone could do me a favour. Is there anyone kind enough in Russia who would be able to send me a popular russian magazine, it does not have to be new. I know its alot to ask and its a bit of a long shot but if there is anyone kind enough out there i would really apreciate it. Please email me at Becksx1@Hotmail.com

Also if anyone wants to talk to someone who has lived in both the north and south of england or would like a penpal then please email me to or if anyone needs any help with english.

If you are currently living in London you should be able to find a Russian magazine quite easily in Grant and Cutler. It's just a little off Tottenham Court Rd / Soho area. Forgot the exact street. We've discussed it before on here, do a search if you like.

Don't worry, no problem. It's not like it's a FAQ or something.

Its just off Oxford Street. If you are going down Oxford Street from Centre Point or from Tottenham Court Road tube station, you turn left when you get to Poland Street.

I only recently realised that 'thank you' is two words.

    Oh right, sorry.

Well, what I said applies to Tatu's sentence too. Since he was talking about a phrase, it's still singular.

"Thank you" is two words. is correct.

If, on the other hand, you were talking about the words rather than the phrase, you'd have to say

"Thank" and "you" are two words.

The "a lot-thing" bugged me as I learnt that you say "there is a lot of dogs", even though the noun is plural.
    No we don't, sorry

There is a lot of dogs. is grammatically incorrect.

There are a lot of dogs. is correct.

However, you might hear someone say

    There's a lot of dogs.

This obviously just contains a contraction of the former, incorrect phrase (there is --> there's). The reason it can be used has nothing to do with grammar though, but is because we love our contractions in spoken English, and there're is too hard to say to be a usable one

    I say there're...
Is "there're" really a contraction though, technically speaking?

I mean, there must be some sort of vowel sound between the two r's, otherwise it would just be pronounced 'there', and if there is a vowel sound, then it's not really a contraction, you are just saying 'there are' with a destressed 'are'.

I'm not fussed either way, it doesn't really have any bearing on why you might hear "there's a lot of dogs", but you're unlikely to hear "there is a lot of dogs".

I hereby pronounce this thread Officially Derailed.

    Sorry Becks
