Thread: Russian "Folk medicines"

imho, the best "Folk medicines" is tea+honey, lemon or raspberry jam...may be I`m weird Russian, but I`m always cure myself with such stuff...
And of course, good old "ascorbic acid" and aspirine, but this is not a "Folk medicines" i guess...

Human urine supposedly contains properties that act as a powerful remedy for neutralizing the venom of Jellyfish and Sea Urchin stings. It alleviates the searing pain almost instantly.

I once knew a friend of my relatives who believed spreading butter on an open wound or cut would provide an effective cure. Nasty.

Mix vodka with crushed red pepper, had a shot and go to sleep. Next day you'll be ok (if you survive).

Я не слышала о прикладывании мочи к ушибам, но то, что это лучшая мгновенная помощь при ожогах огнём или кипятком, проверено мной много-много раз. Читала, что у Тура Нейердала этим спасли человека, всё тело которого было обожжено медузами. Шесть человек его окружили и помочились на него. У них там был русский врач Юрий Сенкевич.

Actually, the urine-on-jellyfish-sting thing does work. My mom told me she got stung once and that was the remedy she used (this was another case of "too much information", by the way). Maybe it's psycological, but I doubt it; she is a nurse, and she gave some scientific reason for why it works. But she did say covering the wound in sand works just as well, so unless you just feel like being cool, I'd say go with the sand

Apparently an handfull of charcoal disolved in hot water helps for diarea.

yep, as I wrote, it helps to prevent, not to heal. And taking garlic before going to bed, that is an intersting idea, I heard it helps agains HIV as well. Take a lot of garlic during a day, and I can almost certanly guarantee that risk of getting HIV-infected decreased dramatically.

Well, those bacterias are not a danger to your open wound at all, so you should not be worried about that at all.

Let's say, you got injuried in montains, there are no doctors around, and you do not have water on yourself, as you thought that would be just a short hike from camp. And urine is the only possibility to wash your wound? Would you prefer to get hangrena infection (which is uncurable), or you give up on your believing that urine is that disgusting?

Gangrene occurs when a body part loses its blood supply, it is not an infection. An infection can cause gangrene, but it would have to have been there for a certain period of time. Mentally, I think at that particular point in time, where I seriously injured myself, I would probably take my chances, because infection is not an automatic thing. Contain the wound with cloth and get back as soon as possible. If it does get infected, it would be already too late to try urinal tricks!
