blood pressure

In this message Roxy said: "blood pressure of 80/50 is great for a world athlete". However, these numbers are very strange for me. What does "80/50" mean?

Так в том и дело, что "у взрослых нижней границей нормы артериального давления считаются цифры 105/65 мм рт. ст.", а дальше обморок, наверное... А тут, вдруг, "80/50 is great for a world athlete". Как понять? Может быть, я неправильно смысл фразы понимаю?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypotension
For most individuals, a healthy blood pressure is 115/75 mmHg. A small drop in blood pressure, even as little as 20 mmHg, can result in transient hypotension.

Re: blood pressure

Звездочёт,

Hi, I translated this thread and see you are questioning not only what is the 80/50 but the comment my daughter made. She was making sort of a joke about me, because I am NOT a world class athlete, yet my pulse rate and blood pressure were behaving as such. She was also telling the truth about athletes though. A number of athletes, say Lance Armstrong, have very low "resting" or "standing" blood pressure and pulse rates or heart rates (beats per minute).

Here is some more info about it. If you still have questions... please ask.

What Is Low Blood Pressure?]
Hypotension is the medical term for low blood pressure (less than 90/60). Normal blood pressure is usually in the range of 120/80 (systolic/diastolic). In healthy people, especially athletes, low blood pressure is a sign of good cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) health.

Systolic, Diastolic & Pulse pressures]
For each heartbeat, blood pressure varies between systolic and diastolic pressures.
Systolic pressure is peak pressure in the arteries, which occurs near the end of the cardiac cycle when the ventricles are contracting.
Diastolic pressure is minimum pressure in the arteries, which occurs near the beginning of the cardiac cycle when the ventricles are filled with blood. An example of normal measured values for a resting, healthy adult human is 115 mmHg systolic and 75 mmHg diastolic (written as 115/75 mmHg, and spoken (in the US) as "one fifteen over seventy-five").
Pulse pressure is the difference between systolic and diastolic pressures.

Why athletes have a lower pulse rate]
Exercise increases the strength of the heart muscle. A stronger heart muscle pumps more efficiently, i.e., more blood pumped per pulse beat. As a result, the number of beats [pulses] required to move the same amount of blood through the body is decreased. In addition, exercise increases the number of capillaries in muscle. This provides more channels to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide during exercise. The result is that gas exchange in both the lungs and the muscles is faster. This, in turn, reduces demand on the heart to pump faster.
I only speak two languages, English and bad English.

Re: blood pressure

Rockzmom, thanks very much. It’s clear now.
Usually my blood pressure 120/70 and I often hear in medical station: “[You are] like cosmonaut”, that means “perfect”. On the other hand I did not know 80/50 is norm for sportsman. That’s why I thought Roxy’s “world athletes” and Russian “cosmonaut” are equal, and Roxy’s words mean “mom blood pressure are perfect, too perfect” (usually people are not ideal). I know Americans use foot and inch, for example, so my first thought was “may be, they use other units for blood pressure too”.
