    Question about Clothing

I'm going to Russia in a few weeks, travelling around during winter. The only chance you can get snow in Europe at Christmas those days is going to the Oural.

Do you have any specific advice to the clothing? I would like to buy a russian vest and chapka.

I found http://www.bask.ru/ Looks like they have everything I might need. However I'm asking here just in case you have something to add thx!

Do you want souvenirs or clothing in order not to get cold?
For the souvenirs - if you happen to be in Moscow - visit Stary Arbat (Старый Арбат) - there are lots of that stuff
In order not to get cold - just visit your local store and specially ask for clothing that could sustain temperatures of -30 to -40 Celcius. I think that would be enough.
And remember - two thinner pieces of clothing are warmer that a single thicker one.
Send me a PM if you need me.

If you happen to be on Stary Arbat, keep in mind that this place is very popular with tourists and prices of souvenirs are generally very high. If your visit to Stary Arbat is your last day in Moscow, then you might not care about prices but if you come across a good thing before your visit to Stary Arbat, you'd better buy it. The chance that it'll be more expensive that the same one on Stary Arbat is slim.

So am I. That's absolutely abnormal. I hear it is a record high, isn't it? What do you think of such warm weather in December in Moscow/Dmitrov?

Same thing here in Finland. Should be snow, or at least loska (like watery snow in Finnish), but no. I can even still ride my bike.
I'm but a beginner in Russian, so please correct me.
However, I'm supposed to be good in English, so if you correct me there, I become very angry! Grr!
And if you, for some reason, need help in Finnish, I'm glad to help.

Watery snow is called 'slush' I believe and 'sleet' when it's falling.

There's no snow many countries right now, they're all getting typical British Autumn weather, and yeah it's a new record.

    Sucks for ski resorts.
Please correct any Russian language mistakes I make.

All these talks about global warming drive me round the best. Really. I admit that climate change is taking place these days but there's no need to talk about global warming all the time. It's so controversial. Have a look at the following link: http://www.hmn.ru/index1.php?code=1&nn=349 As you can see, the temperature in 1939 was very close to that of today. I wonder if the term 'global warming' was known to 1939 weather experts?

I wonder if in the late 1930s, early 1940s there were warm winters almost every year? I seem to remember reading about a particularily cold winter during these years

Anyway, here in California it is abnormally cold this year. If we had percipitiation at night, we'd be covered in snow!

PS: Global Warming is a misleading term, Global Climate Change is better, since science shows that weather will be more extreme (ie colder AND warmer AND windier etc.).

It's all so unclear to me, honestly. I don't really understand much about weather. All I'm normally interested in is what weather will be like in the next few days.
As for the warm winters back in the 1930s, early 1940s, I don't think there were many warm weathers at that time. I hear it was rather cold then.
Here in Moscow we've had no snow for something like two weeks now. It's absolutely abnormal for Moscow. Last winter we had an extremely cold winter when temperatures dropped as low as -33C. That was really cold. Not as cold as somewhere in Siberia but still very cold for Moscow's temperate region.

I've just watched a news report on one of the Russian main TV channels which said that Europe's also suffering from unusually warm weather. Ski resorts are in serious trouble because all the visitors have to leave the resorts due to the absence of snow. They say artificial snow melts as well at such warm temperatures.
The winter may well make up for today's record high temperatures throughout Europe later on.

Whatever you call it, Global Warming is a poster child for what we in the scientific community like to call bs. Sure the global mean temperature has risen in the last 150 years, because 150 years ago was one of the coldest periods in human history. a.k.a. the Little Ice Age.

Sure, the polar ice caps have been shrinking since 1979. Because 1979 was the second coldest period in the Arctic in a century.

I have a very long, very terse, reasonably convincing presentation to this effect I deliver on occasion...

The moral of the story is: dress appropriately, but don't blame my Land Rover for normal climate variation.
