    podrosetnik in English

Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. I'll post it here, just for an experiment. Maybe it will be answered in this forum.

How do you call these things in English:

    http://www.sib-a.ru/images/2297d.jpg
    http://www.1253322.ru/files/store4327.jpg
    http://ru.all-biz.info/img/ru/catalog/small/145445.jpeg

It's a thing where you put an electric socket. In a wall, it looks like this:
    http://www.elektrodom.ru/img/albums/pic1231925957.JPG
    http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/3412/sup ... _e39bcb6_M

It's strange enough, but I haven't find any translation in any language; only for English Lingvo offered, "Manchester plate"... but I can't believe you really call it like that. In Russian, we call it "подрозетник".
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

Ooops edit: I thought you were talking about what you put IN the socket, i.e. an electrical plug.

But then when I checked it again... No, I have no idea what that is called.
Plate might cover it, but plate is a very general word.
Really it's a very specialised kind of thing and most people would not do it themselves, but have an electrician over to do the work... I doubt that there are a lot of people who know what this is called, other than professional electricians or carpenters. Perhaps it has no name..

Oh the joys of translations....! :"": I am guessing you are doing some kind of specialised translations job... ?
    Sorry I couldn't help.

If you are pressed for time, call it "socket base" for the time being.

    Re: podrosetnik in English

    Is that what you mean?
No... What I mean is not "the thing that you put in an electrical socket", but quite the contrary, it's a place in a wall where you put a socket into. Well, in fact, not "you", but an electrician.

I am guessing you are doing some kind of specialised translations job
No, I'm just doing some kind of electrician jobs in my new and totally empty flat and I was going to write to a friend about подрозетники, but I f........ cracked all my head trying to find the word.

    Oh ok...

Well the other way to check something very specialised like this would be to find a specialised online retailer (shop).
Basically try to find if they are selling it.

The big DIY (do-it-yourself home repairs) stores in the UK are Homebase, Wickes and some other that i can't recall the name of right now.
Then just try to find a picture or search for a word... I tried for "manchester plate" at Wickes - they don't have it, so I doubt that your friend would know the word.

My experience of moving to the UK is that it's really hard to find out some specialised vocabulary like carpentry, electrical and my hobby -- sewing. Dictionaries can be very misleading, confusing or outdated on such specialised things. It can be such a pest to have to go into a shop and start saying "you know that thing that you can put spare needles in, do you have that?" or "one of those metal circles that goes between the screw and the wall"... They think you are slightly retarded, because in my case they can't really hear that I am a foreigner.

    Etc!

    ring main
a domestic electrical supply in which outlet sockets are connected to the mains supply through a ring circuit

Here's a clip illustrating how one can install a socket:

    The подрозетник is square here.

Wow, is that how you do it!!

Olya are you going to do this yourself....?

Personally I am rather paranoid about electricity.

    Re: podrosetnik in English

Batibox. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRYZLLR6UFo
... OUR=EXPORT
Batibox TM flush-mounting boxes for masonry
Universal box for screw or claw mounting

Outlet box".

    Re: podrosetnik in English

    Re: podrosetnik in English

    Re: podrosetnik in English
