October revolution of 1917 took place exactly 90 years ago.

    An anniversary of some kind.

The Russian revolution is the biggest mistake in human history. They put an end to one of the greatest empires ever known to man.

Oh, exactly "the biggest one in human history"? Are you sure?

In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

I think that the Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire were no less 'greatest'.

What about the Mongol Empire or even, dare I say it, the British Empire?
One day, when I write brilliant Russian I will put some Russian text here. However, I can't promise that it will be in anyway witty.

Please correct my Russian. I implore you fellow human.

    What happened Mr. I-miss-the-soviet-union

Besides, Russia would have gotten wiped off the face of the earth if not for the industrial capabilities of the soviet union.

Communism was meant to fail. The "greatness" comes from the USSR's weapon capabilities, not the idea itself. They wasted all their money on weapons they would never use, all on the expense of social spending. Just a quick track of its history shows that it has serious priority issues.

Everywhere they had been in, there would be a mess. Germany is a good example.*

The only thing I'd applaud is the USSR the education system. The LikBez program was phenomenal. I like how they reformed the Russian language and preserved it. Apart from that, I see nothing "great" about the USSR.

I do not claim expertise on the matter. I do not know how it was. Most people I know who were born in the USSR liked it, but in terms of global politics, it ruined any possible chance to have Russia (at least the European part) become part of the West. Who knows? I could've been one of the most advanced countries by now if things just went their way, without any revolution.

I expect yet another flow of opposing ideas.

    ______
    * I do not mean that the invasion of Germany was wrong. It was the right thing to do, it seemed, given the problems going on then. It's just Berlin is a good example that shows the contrast of ideologies played out. The Soviet part was in the gutters and Germany had to play SERIOUS reparation money to fix it after the collapse of the wall.

I say again, I don't think a peasant army could have fought off Hitlers onslaught in WWII. The farther back you go the more history could change.

One of the main reason Russia was able to fight off the blitzkrieg was because they were able to mass produce a couple hundred thousand tanks in a relatively small amount of time. Something the US was able to do, as well, but only because we had 150 years of practice as a capitalist state.

The soviet union was hardly 20 years old when it had to mass mobilize and produce everything it needed to fight for its very existence.

They didn't do half bad if you asked me.

I don't think it was 'set up' to fail either. But they did, as you pointed out have poor money management and instead of adapting and evolving (like present day "communist" china) they stuck to the old ways till the bitter end.

about 30 years ago people worshiped Mao just as much as Russians did Lenin in the soviet union. Nowadays Mao is nothing more than a statue in a square and one of the many things that helped mold china to its present state. Unlike Lenin who has been vilified and demonized and compared with Stalin and Hitler.

Lenin didn't do anything that any other normal person wouldn't have done after just overthrowing a government to assure that they stay in power. But thats a different story altogether.

Are those Russian-African sailors I see in the background? Are they also demonstrating for Russian communism?

Anyway, USSR were one of the foremost leaders in equal rights for women and men. They also gave the world Tetris, let's not forget that for a second!!!

They look pretty first generation African to me. They have very ethnic features... I bet they are most likely students or there for some other kind of work/study or sports program.

Looks like they're just having fun, who can tell if they are actually supporting communism... Though they might be since the rate of hate crimes on foreigners was probably 0% in soviet times.
