Music, I have found, is one of the greatest tools in language learning. Learning a new language is inherently repetitive, so being able to repete lyrics in one's head with a catchy tune is a splendid way to acquire vocabulary, grammar, syntax.
My own musical tastes are fundamentally Classical — Mozart has long been my favorite composer. I also greatly enjoy singing, and have a bass voice, and Mozart would favor basses with lead roles and heroic roles (Figaro, Don Giovanni, Sarastro, Papageno, etc.), which makes the composer even easier to like! I'm greatly interested in learning some bass arias in Russian — or about any classical piece you might recommend!
Outside of classical music, I'm especially fond of the Beatles and mostly any of the music and bands associated with them. I more recently have gotten to love hard rock and heavy metal. However, I haven't yet found any Russian bands that "rock hard" enough for my tastes.
My favorite band is probably Tenacious D. Even though the songs of Tenacious D are predominantly comical, the musical styles cover a fusion of rock varieties, from folk music to hard rock to heavy metal. My favorite song of theirs has to be Master Exploder (WARNING: some foul language at this link: Master Exploder). Another one of my favorites is The Metal, which exemplifies the style of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, among others.
