Thread: Need help with icq

I managed to get some Russian penpals and I'm quite happy about it, but I have a small problem. I tried to communicate with one of them via icq and his cyrilic appeared to me as some unintelligible letters like "ęčđčëčöĺé ěîćíî ďčńŕňü" ... I thought he was just making fun of me, or just spamming, but I want to be sure, so I'm asking you :

Have you ever had such a problem?
If yes, what's the solution?

Make sure Cyrillic support is enabled in your Windows -- check language settings in your control panel

Check your preferences in ICQ for Multilingual support

Well, I can use cyrilic without a problem... so I don't think this is a problem of language support. Maybe a bug.
By the way, I managed to contact him via skype and we had a nice conversation, so the main problem is solved.

ICQ: Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

It is caused by different encodings. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojibake#Russian (side note: кракозябры doesn't mean "childish scribbles").

If you use 'the default os', try to set 'Russian' for 'non-unicode' somewhere in 'languages and regional options'.

It depends what sort of ICQ soft do you use to. Usually it has option for set encoding - try to change encoding on ''windows-1251'. Or tell your penpal he change encoding to "utf-8".

I use ICQ lately instead of QIP, that really had this problem. Download the newest version from the ICQ.com and tell your friend to do the same. I have no problem of that kind now, after I did that.
