Thread: Mobile phone........ or cellphone?

I have a question.

What's the "mobile phone" and "cellphone"? Are these words synonims? Or they have something different?

In Russia we have 2 names - "мобильный телефон" и "сотовый телефон". I even don't know what's the difference between our words, but it's really interesting, what do you think.

in england we say mobile and in america they say cell, and yeah, they're the same thing

Yep, they're the same thing. In America 'cell' or 'cellphone' is used.

Ну если насчет русских понятий "мобильный телефон" и "сотовый телефон" - специфика очевидна из самих названий. Мобильный телефон - это телефон, не привязанный жестко к какому-либо физическому местоположению. Сотовый телефон - телефон, работающий в сети с ячеистой структурой. Для GSM это, в принципе, одно и то же. Но, насколько я знаю, в GSM всегда используется термин mobile (International Mobile Equipment Identifier, International Mobile Subscriber Identity etc).

мобильный телефон - мобильник, мобила
сотовый телефон - сотик
