A methodology to get those verbs aspects in your head..

What do you think about the following learning methodology


я мучил () -- > I was torturing
logically on a timeline after that we can say
я замучил -- > I tortured
я мучаю -- I'm torturing
я замучаю -- I'm going to torture

I want to torture a fly : я хочу мучить или замучить мужу ?

I'm trying to fix in my brain circuitry the prefix за with time relating to the action

когда я мучил мудрого мужа, она мучила мух.
Теперь я мучаю её с мусором, а потом она тоже замучает меня.
к сожалению, после этого, я пойду к черту, потому что я замучил людей.

Do the same thing with all verbs?

EDIT: Here I had changed all of your мучаю's into мучу's. But then I found out that there are TWO CONJUGATIONS!!!! Whats with that? In my dictionary, it gives "мучу, мучишь...etc...but on google, I got more hits with мучаю. When do you use one over the other?

EDIT2: Ok. So I found out that мучать = мучить, which would explain the conjugation difference. So when do I use one over the other? Is мучать poetic, kinda like the difference between тобой and тобою?

Is that what you meant? If so, the "она" on the second part of the sentence should be "он", and you would need to fix the verb accordingly.

Those last three sentences didn't make much sense to me. Maybe you can clarify a bit?

мучай+ / мучи+ (imperfective) // за (perfective)

I wanted to write short sentences that would use the different tenses of the verb. That way I would be able to better use the imperfective and perfective verbs.

The sense is pretty simple. I wanted to say

"While I was torturing the wise husband, she was torturing some flies.
Now, I'm torturing her with garbage (happens to be a word starting with му), after that SHE is going to torture me with garbage."

Why ОН? It is "she"

Then I wanted a sentence that use the perfective past of "torture" and I say "I will go to hell because I tortured people."

Apparently it did not make sense.

мучать = мучить, intuitively, I see no difference. One of the sources claims that мучать is colloquial, and I incline to agree after some thinking. However, if I didn't look up, I wouldn't have found out.

I noticed that мучаю is used more often, and мУчу becomes somewhat outdated, but I couldn't tell the reason. Possibly, to tell it from мучУ (from мутить).

Замучить literally is normally used for "tortured to death". Mordan, if you were just giving people pain, but there were no fatalities, then you should say "мучил", not "замучил". Unless, of course, it's referred to someone who can't stand you any longer because of the non-stop nagging, for example, then it's definitely "замучил".

What a strange case. According to derivational rules, the root мук- should form *мукать ->*мукаю or *мучать/мучить -> мучу. But it's right there in the dictionary: мУчать/мУчаю.

It doesn't make sense, unless you turn "wise husband" into "wise wife". "She" refers to the subject of you last subsentence, so the genders have to match. If you meant that you are torturing a (not the) wise husband, while she (someone else) was torturing some flies, well u still have to porvide information beforehand of who this "she" is.

I changed it from perfective to imperfective, because if you say "I'm going to hell, because I tortured people", you are saying that you "used to" torture people. Not tortured them and then stopped torturing them. It was an ongoing thing that you used to do.
