Still no shipping to Ukraine, though. I don't get it. Is it that hard? It's right there, next to Poland, lol.

Hahahahaha! That might be so but you just need to know how to shop there.

I was just there yesterday and bought a dress for my daughter: Original price $59 and I paid $11. In April, we bought another dress there: original price, $99.00, paid $7.94 and that's including tax!!

We always go there for amazing deals on clothes.... and we are never disappointed.

    Poland, what's that?

Well, haha, I have managed to survive my entire life without ever shopping at Macy's although I recognise the name from books and magazines!

I would imagine that you would be in the exact same situation as me, if you were to order anything from the USA, unfortunately!

You'd end up paying twice the retail price, in shipping and import duties. Although the American prices for clothes, makeup and electronics are usually a lot cheaper than the prices in most European countries, it is still not worth buying from there because of Customs and shipping. So it's just irritating to see those cheap prices. (I can't figure out why electronics in the USA sell for almost half of what the exact same product costs in Europe (including Ukraine and Belarus at least.))

Anyway, Ukraine is in the customs union with Russia right? If you wanted something that was not on sale in the Ukraine, couldn't you order it from Russia and pay no import duties and get fairly speedy delivery, or? From what I hear/read both Moscow and St Petersburg have really good shopping nowadays - everything from super cheap stuff in markets, to top end designer clothes and electronics. I imagine most things that you might reasonably want, would be available to buy in Russia, unless you had some very specific need. I wouldn't know how the prices compare with elsewhere though. I expect many online Russian shops include the Ukraine in their sales area, right?

It IS fun to buy things from the US though, and they sure have lots of great stuff, including some not on sale elsewhere.
There is a special brand of cosmetics that I like, which I sometimes order from the USA. And a few times I have bought books on American Amazon.com (as opposed to the joint UK/DE/FR Amazon).

And I would really want to be able to shop from the awesome "zappos.com" site - several times I've wanted to! They've got tens of thousands of shoes on sale, great prices. But they don't ship to Europe and do not accept non-American credit cards. Most American online shops have this policy, sadly.

    That's true.
Also many imported products (clothes, gadgets, etc.) are grossly overpriced both in Russia and Ukraine. It's often cheaper to buy directly from American stores, especially those that ship to the US only. Even having to pay extra 25% of a product's price to a "middleman", and paying for 'two' shippings (withing the US and from there to Ukraine) it still might cost me much less than it costs at a local store (if it's available at all).

Wow, who would have thought!! But it certainly adds in with the extremely overpriced camera I bought in Belarus.
It cost at least a third more compared to what it cost in the nearest EU country.
I did not realise it is common to order from the US, in Ukraine etc. I rarely do it.

Usually it works the other way round: electronic sales are a lot more developed in Ukraine, so no need for Ukrainians to visit Russian shops. On the contrary, Ukranian shops often speak Russian, and I constantly get .ua shops at the top of Google search results. Sadly, "Russian" shop=Moscow shop, and they mostly want to deliver within the Moscow only (no free at all!). And I never met an Ukrainian internet shop delivering to Russia. It's easier to buy on Ebay, even though it might take 2 months. I have had the bad experience with Moscow internet sellers (except Ozon, which however is expensive and limited in range of available products).

What surpises me a lot is why, on ebay, most shops situated in US ship within US only? It must be the same reason as Moscow shops ship within Moscow only, but what is the reason exactly? Somebody knows?

That's crazy - all countries that are not large need to be in a customs union otherwise regular people end up paying too much for goods.

US shops don't care, they have a big enough domestic market. Sometimes they don't trust people outside of the US - and also, they think it's complicated to work out shipping costs etc. That's the impression I get.
There are European versions of ebay which list the Europe based vendors first. They normally ship across the EU anyway, and they are probably not as put off by international shipping. So try ebay.de or ebay.co.uk or ebay.fr - they are probably more likely to ship to Ukraine or Russia.

Well, they could try to join the EU too, I guess - but it would take a long time until that happened, the EU would put masses of requirements of things that the Ukraine needed to to change... Plus, right now the EU has lots of problems of its own deal with.

But the question is what would really be in it for Ukraine. Looking at Romania, they have not recieved a fraction of the money that was spent by the EU in Southern Europe or the Baltic states. I spoke to some Romanians and they actually felt a bit cheated and second class Europeans. Very sad. I think Ukraine is already arguably in a better shape than Romania. Roads and railroads were better, shopping equivalent. I wouldn't know about schools and hospitals. Plus despite everything that the EU has done / is trying to do in the Baltic states, places like Latvia still has terrible problems and the simply being a low cost location within the EU. Not to mention what is going on in Greece and Spain.

I think Ukraine might get a faster deal with Russia & co, with less strings attached.

And the EU will (hopefully!) still be there in 10 years, if the Ukrainians are still interested, plus they'd be negotiating from a better starting point.

What are they waiting for! I'd want to join the customs union with the other CIS countries if I was Ukrainian.

+100500 again. Of course, integrating with Russia would be the only reasonable decision for Ukraine, but it won't happen easily.
