Thread: Was I too hasty with the ты?

Have I made a mistake? I offered ты upon my third meeting with a young Russian fellow who is giving me language lessons. He's a little younger than me, but not more than five years (in our 20s). He sort of laughed and then smoothly changed the subject. Since then we've exchanged text messages: I used ты, but when he replied it was with "Здравствуйте!" Oy...

Now what? Am I supposed to switch back to вы? Was I inadvertently rude or too forward? Does gender play a role here?

Well, he teaches you. He could explain you why he doesn't want to be addressed "ты" and tell you more about specificity (?) of using "ты" and "вы." Or at least just to say that he doesn't want to be addressed "ты," to say that he wants you both to address each other "вы," like before.
Возможно, он хочет, чтобы отношения оставались формальными. В любом случае, перестань беспокоиться, ничего страшного не произошло.

Не, ну ты ж не наглей. )) Не настолько ты старше.

А ты его самого спроси. Как ему удобней, так и обращайся.

В принципе, это -- обычное дело, когда более старший говорит "ты", а младший -- "вы". Ваш учитель может просто стесняться, возможно, он видит вас более зрелым человеком чем он сам, и потому испытывает неловкость.

Well, I think he is just "stuck up"! He wants to keep his position as "the teacher" unblemished and above that of his student. Not unusual In Russia but why he won't address you in the informal is weird! My wife says that, "He is just stupid."

Maybe he's waiting to ask her out to go drink брудершафт so they can both be on ты! Once you've had drinks together it's ok to use ты.

Alright, so the consensus is that he's just shy; see me as more mature than him; prefers to keep the lessons formal; stuck up; being stupid about it; waiting to ply me with alcohol; missing a valuable teaching opportunity to clear this whole mess up and just explain what's going on.

And the further consensus is that I should use ты because I'm older; use вы because I'm not that much older; not feel awkward and uncomfortable about this; definitely feel awkward and uncomfortable about this; just ask him what he wants; wait for the alcohol (one can hope!).

Он учитель, ты (Вы) ученица. Обращение, естественно, должно быть на "Вы".

  если ты младше
  то обращаешься на "Вы"
  иначе
    если ты старше на 20 лет
    то обращаешься как хочешь

На тот случай, если ты серьезно спрашивала: универсальных правил на все случаи жизни нет. Среди носителей языка тоже возникают ситуации, когда один считает уместным обращение на "вы", а другой пытается доказать, что "ты" было бы лучше (я из своего личного опыта по крайней мере три таких могу вспомнить).

Oh dear, my sincere apologies if anyone thought I was laughing at you, as opposed to the situation, because I really appreciate all the replies. I realize now that there's no hard rule, and I'll have to clarify it with him, but in the meanwhile it's just heartening that even a group of native speakers didn't come to a consensus. For once there's a reason for my confusion!

i think if it's private lessons, use ti. i use ti with all my students and they do the same, it's no big deal. in your shoes i would only think about vi if he was an old professor or something.

Нет такой формулы или алгоритма, которые бы чётко описывали, когда стоит переходить на ты, а когда — нет. В приватных отношениях это — особенно тонкий момент, который зависит от многих факторов, и прежде всего от факторов внутренних, от того, что происходит в человеческих душах. Так, например, если ваш учитель очень молод, то он может «прятаться» в более безопасном мире «вы» — это проблема взросления и становления личной самостоятельности. Так же возможно, что мужчина рассматривает ваши отношения сугубо профессионально, и по натуре он не является человеком очень общительным. В этом случае он постарается сохранить эмоциональную дистанцию между вами.

Главное, что вы должны понять, это то, что не стоит беспокоиться, если ваша попытка перейти на «ты» провалилась; нет ничего страшного в этом. И вы, в принципе, можете избрать любую форму обращения к учителю, просто не настаивайте на том, что бы он менял свою.

You've just summed up what I've learned from this thread! I didn't realize to what extent all these these factors made a difference (hence my question). Now I certainly do!

Like when you learn that ее forms comparatives, until the first time you say плохее, see the reaction, and realize that maybe there's more to the "rules" than you know...

Yes she is Russian (sorry Olya baby, but you had your chance with me) AND she is an English teacher aswell. She uses "ты" with all of her students, who are all ages.

Anyway 20 somethings do not need to use "ti" these days.
