    Help please

    Hello, please forgive the request for assistance but I need the help of Russian speaking individuals. I am working in a specific area of international Internet domain names and am trying to find someone I can call upon now and again for assistance.

    An example of this is the Russian word КОМПЬЮТЕРНАЯ. I have used all the available online tools and they all tell me that it means Computer, so my question is does this word work in the sense of a website name such as [url]www.КОМПЬЮТЕ

    What, are you going to reserve all the valuable new Cyrillic domain names (equivalent of computer.com) or are you just trying to localise your own company's site into Russian?

    computer=компьютер

    I am not sure how the new cyrillic URLs work, but I'd be pretty surprised if that one is still free.

    Re: Help please

    Thanks for the reply Hanna, i'm not under any pretence that I can go out and register loads of valuable Cyrillic domain names, that boat sailed a long time ago but i am tasked with obtaining Russian domain names on the IT side of things particularly computer components. To be honest i'm not sure i'm capable of completing the task having absolutely no knowledge of the language! Could you please enlighten me as to the meaning of КОМПЬЮТЕРНАЯ
    The travel insurance thing is a personal project by the way, i'm trying to put together a worldwide travel insurance directory.
    Thanks

    This is an adjective, meaning something like "computer-ish". It has no direct equivalent in English. It is not the translation of the noun "computer", (that would be "компьютер")

    The word you asked about is bent to apply to a noun of feminine gender.
    For example:

    Компьютерная игра
    ="Computer game"

    "Компьютерная газета"
    ="Magazine about Computers / computer magazine
    (газета => gazeta => magazine)

    Russian has a very different grammar from English!

    A different word is used if it is referring to a masculine (компьютерный), neutral (компьютерное) noun, or a noun in plural (компьютерные).

    This word can never really be used by itself, or it doesn't make sense. You'd wonder "computer" - what??

    Perhaps if you are selling some particular type of thing, you can add that, and get the a more descriptive URL that way. For example, like Computercomponents.com.

    I'd leave it to a native speaker to say whether Компьютерная.com sounds good as a URL or not! It seems a bit half-baked to me...
    And how do you say computer components in Russian?

    Also there are cases...
    "Россия для русских" - это неправильно. Остальные-то чем лучше?

    Компьютерная by itself sounds to me like Прачечная (laundry), just because of the ending, it adds a certain comical effect, if you will. I would definitely not choose such an adjective as a domain name.
    компьютер sounds solid, which is much better

    That'll be "компьютерная comната".

    I suppose it could be good if the site was for hobbyists.

    Also, "Компьютерная" without a noun can become a noun in its own right and mean what I said.
