Happy Russia Thread - Share Positive Stories!

In this thread, only write the nice and positive stories connected to Russia, save your negative biased stuff for other threads! If you are quoting an article and you see some negativitey in there, you can censor it out!

Here is an article I found on BBC, Lativa and Russia have finally settled their differences and agreed on a border!

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6498049.stm

Latvia and Russia have signed a border treaty, making the boundary between the countries official for the first time since the fall of Soviet Union in 1991.

The treaty was signed in Moscow by the Latvian and Russian prime ministers.

The treaty was drawn up 10 years ago, but both nations had previously failed to ratify it because of disagreements about the Soviet past.

It is hoped that the signing of the agreement will now lead to a warming in Latvian-Russian relations.

    Historical dispute

Ties between the countries have rarely been more than frosty since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Previous attempts to sign the treaty had failed because of disagreement over whether Latvia was occupied by the Soviet Union or - as Russia says - joined voluntarily in 1940.

Those supporting the deal have said Latvia should leave the past behind - especially now that the country is in the European Union, and this border is the EU's border with Russia too.

After the signing ceremony, Latvian Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis said he hoped the treaty would open the way for more active economic and political dialogue between the two countries.

There is also a positive article about Russia in yesterday's Moscow Times. The beginning of the article is placed on the front page. The article is headed "Yukos Assets Go To Eni And Enel". Here's the first lines of it: http://www.themoscowtimes.com/stories/2 ... 5/001.html

I wouldn't say that the article is likely to have a very positive impact on how Russia's seen in the West but at least the fact that some of the assets of Yukos were bought by a foreign company is a good sign to all those interested in Russian business either as investors or anyone else. Even though the article says the Italian company has arranged for the assets to be transferred to Gazprom in the immediate future, the deal is still seen in a positive light.

kalinka_vinnie, there are significant doubts that that treaty will afford the two countries a good opportunity for closer cooperation. By the way, Russia has to sign a lot of such treaties with its past republics. Though I can't now recall with which countries we don't have a proper border.

I don't know if I'd call that article positive, but I am not going to argue! Not in this thread!!!
And maybe there are doubts about closer cooperation, but it is an important first step! You can't have normal relations if one country wants a part of another!

I also found it rather hard to call that piece of news positive but after giving it some thought, I decided that the story was positive as opposed to a great many other stories about Russia apearing in the media daily.

Isn't it strange that only positive articles have been posted so far? Or are we used to it yet?

Может быть, было бы лучшей идеей не постить это до тех пор, пока они вернутся на землю без проблем!

In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.
