Sounds like complete BS to me. I think people just don't want to spare efforts to learn linguistics, etymology, Vasmer etc. to find out the truth because it is boring. Instead they enjoy constructing such arbitrary abbreviations. It is a light form of СПГС.
Abbreviations (колхоз, совхоз, универмаг, филфак, etc) became popular only after 1917.
"Россия для русских" - это неправильно. Остальные-то чем лучше?
That makes sense about the 1917 thing. For some reason, seeing these kinds of abbreviations makes me think of communism even when they are used today for things that have nothing to do with communism.
