    Film comment: CUCKOO

Hi. I watched 2 forieng(sp) films today. After watching "I'm not scared" (A+) (Italian) on total accident not knowing it would be subtitled I got excited at the prospect of Russian films at the local blockbuster video. All I could find was a movie called Cuckoo which isn't exactly russian but a 3 language film. Finnish/Russian/Lapp. But, I had the feeling the subtitles didn't match up AND I hated the way the Russian was portrayed. Did anybody else have gripes about this movie, or was this covered in another thread?

Any comments on the accuracy of the russian portion of the English subtitles would be great!

    Hi and bye all

Yeah I have seen it... and as far as I can remember, I didn't notice anything way off... or did I? Well, I must admit that the Lapp translation sucked! I mean: hurutar mearrama huttahetta hurr!!! They translated that as: Hello

Anyway, was it the Gerlost <-> пошёл ты translation you were thinking about?

Anyway, the Russian actor is VERY famous.

Yes, (hi vinnie) that one. I didn't think he did not "act" good. I just didn't like his part.

Going to watch it a few more times--the sceneries great.

well I can appreciate the difficulty of translating the comical situation where Кузмич (the russian) says "пошёл ты" in answer to what is your name, and the finn (also in Russian movies btw) thinks that is his name, but only remembers шёлты, so throughout the movie he calls him шёлты (his real names is Ivan).

    пошёл ты - Get lost
шёлты - corrupted version = Gerlost

The funniest part was that his children think his name still is шёлты!

The movie is really great, I enjoyed it a lot. Russian guy there was quite weird, but I met such people. He is actually a nice guy, but not very intellegent and tatal absence of sense of humor did not improve his personality.

English subtitles for Russian were OK, but in some places far from perfect. I do not remember details, unfortunately. The finn actor is well known in Russia after "Особенности Национальной Охоты".

Kalinka, you are the best person to watch that movie, my God, you can understand all 3 languages?

If you enjoyed that movie, I can recomend "Kolya" - Chech movie, with Russian boy-actor. Really well done, and a lot of 2 language interactions.

Good comeback! Finland is not part of Scandinavia! (although they think so themselves...). You are forgiven!
