Duh, It's Russia Through the Eyes of Hollywood

Have just seen a bit of "Armageddon" starring Bruce Willis on the first channel of Russia. It's surely not new, but I want for another time to set up a howl about Hollywood depicting Russians as imbeciles. Total degradation in the expanse of the universe, if it can be said in English (sorry if not ). All those life stereotypes and infantile conceptions mixed together to get a "nuclear cocktail" in the end. This is the cinematographical propaganda of Russia as "the land of the non-brave and <in the future> the non-free". Curtains down, my friends.

P.S. It's just a momentary drop of emotions.

Don't take it personally, they aren't singling out Russia, Holywood treats everyone on the planet with equaly shallow stereotypes.

Not to mention the fact that Hollywood portrays everybody, including fellow americans, as imbeciles. It's the rule of engagement. After all, what interesting can possibly happen to intelligent people?

Didn't you get it? Armageddon is a piss-take on all those Americans-save-the-world movies. Don't tell me you took it seriously and didn't feel the movie's tongue in cheek tone. I don't think Russians were portrayed unfairly.

I've never seen the movie (I know, I know) but I live in an area of Florida that is heavily supported by jobs in our space program. My father is a technician at Kennedy Space Center, I've been an охранник there in the past and (this is the important bit) a good family friend is head trainer for the fire service.

Because of his position in training, he has met large numbers of cosmonauts and Russians in general through his work there. When I reported that I would be going to Moscow for awhile I was really surprised at his response - he's a flag-waving former Marine - when he told me how much I would enjoy it and how proud he was of me!

He was also an extra in the movie "Armageddon" and is visible in the final scene. So, not everyone involved with the US space program has wrong ideas of Russians - just everyone in Hollywood.

I didn't want to live in America anymore either...so realizing this I did something about it. I packed my bags and moved to China to teach English. And in the process I've met and fell in love with my wonderful russian/ukrainian girlfriend, and began studying russian (something I always wanted to do, ever since my dad went to russia for 5 weeks but thought was too difficult.)

This was such a great idea...if anyone else wants to do it, i'd be glad to help point you in the right direction...

Are you 18 yet, HappyJack? :P

And to be honest, yeah, it is that bad for many of us. This isn't the right thread for me to go into details, but a political climate (including the ability to dissent) spiralling into the dirt, out of control educational costs, complete and utter lack of social programs - I'm off.

On the other hand, and I've had to argue this several times before , I'm not saying "OMFG Russian Federation is so much better than US!" Russia has plenty of problems to work out, as do most nations today. But America just isn't the place for me anymore - it's sad, but it's also the truth and rather than sitting around bitching about it and never doing anything about it, I'm making a proactive change in my life and heading to Moscow to "get me some learnin'!"
