I'm called "Honey" and "Dear" by waitresses all the time.

Over the years of having Russian kids on a J-1 visa work for me I've made a few nicknames. Very personal. Depends upon the situation.
Capecoddah... I hear ya loud and clear and I agree as I did have either dear or dear one something like that and daughter was like... "NO WAY think more G" so that is what started me on the quest for a new term.

I know that we tend to use those terms like "sweetie" and "hon" in non-romantic settings - male or female, but it just made her feel that it was not right for the character at the time in the storyline.

She also had me redo the first 10 chapters! She wanted a scene in chapter 20 to be the opening of the book! It moves everything around now and we have to rewrite so much!.
